I imagine if you're in a state where taking your life is the only option, "trying for them" isn't even a thought.

Not necessarily true.

I'd imagine it's a thought, but at that point some people probably perceive themselves as burdens on others. They instead adopt the "They're better off without me" rhetoric, which can reaffirm their decision to take go through with the act.

You really never know what a person is battling with. I hope his soul finds the peace that he was missing in this life. Condolences to his family.
