Same here. It appears it'll automatically count any miles ran since the challenge start date of Oct. 16, 2011. I just joined DURANTULAS (31st), userID currently J.PayCheck should update to JayDistrict (whenever Nike + responds). I'm so out of shape, haven't jogged since Oct. 2011, I'll be using C25K app. alongside Nike + to ease my way back in so expect some small walk/jog contributions from me. I'm going to ask my nephew (age 14) to join DURANTULAS (27th), he's not an NT'er but he's a runner. Currently in Basketball season so he's not going on long runs as much but can contribute.

Yup! As long as you've racked some mileage prior to joining the challenge since October, it'll be figured in with the current #s. Nice to have more Durantulas!

The nike+ app sometimes acts funny today I logged in some miles and after syncing it a few hours later it deducted miles from my run

They really need to fix the site, as stated before... For the stats, click Leaderboard > Select Team > Golden Lions.
