The Magic could have interest in Los Angeles Clippers guard Corey Maggette or Golden State's Mickael Pietrus in free agency. Maggette would have to first opt out of his contract. Restricted free agents Josh Childress and Luol Deng also could appeal to the Magic. Florida Today
As for disgruntled shooting guard J.J. Redick, Smith said he has no plans of trading him -- for now. Redick has played very little in his first two NBA seasons and asked for a trade midway through last season. For now, he is an insurance policy in case the Magic lose Evans, Dooling or Bogans. Florida Today
Orlando Magic shooting guard J.J. Redick expects to return next season, but he didn't back off his request to be traded if he can't find playing time. Redick, the club's 2006 first-round pick out of Duke who has played sparingly, requested in early January that the Magic deal him. "I want to play. There were a lot of things that were said last summer and in the preseason, you know, and I thought I was going to play. It didn't happen," Redick said. Orlando Sentinel
Mo Evans made $1.7 million last season, but will be looking for something closer to starter's money. His agent, Roger Montgomery, told the Sentinel that his client expects to shop around when the free-agency courting period begins July 1. "I really enjoyed playing here," he said. Orlando Sentinel
Back-up point guards Keyon Dooling and Carlos Arroyo are unrestricted free agents. Dooling, who made $3.5 million last season, has a better chance of returning than Arroyo, who hardly played in the postseason. Orlando Sentinel
NY Knicks Notes...
Donnie Walsh wanted him to scout two lottery possibilities in Danilo Gallinari and Nicolas Batum. It was Thomas' first assignment since being fired as head coach April 18, two days after the season, and reassigned to a role with no title. Walsh said he would seek his advice, and The Post reported the former Knicks president/coach likely would have no office. NY Post
If the Knicks can't get Derrick Rose, there isn't another pure point guard worthy of a top 8 selection and hence, Stephon Marbury likely would play out the final year of his contract. Walsh said he likely will not trade Marbury's $21 million pact because he doesn't want to get back any contracts past 2010, which shoots down the theory the Knicks would want Phoenix favorites Boris Diaw or Leandro Barbosa. NY Post
If the Knicks finish that high they will likely select Memphis point guard Derrick Rose and in that case team president Donnie Walsh will try to trade Marbury or perhaps even release him. If they fail to draft a point guard and can't swing a trade for one, Marbury could survive one final season which wouldn't be the worst thing either. NY Daily News
David Lee is heading into the final year of his rookie contract and could become a restricted free agent next summer. This is usually the time teams try to lock up their young players so as to avoid having to contend with offer sheets from other teams. Nate Robinson is also heading into his final year before restricted free agency. NY Newsday
While Nate Robinson will make $2,020,179 next season, Lee will make $1,788,003, which is the fourth-lowest on the current payroll. By rule the Knicks only need to make one-year commitments to both restricted free agents to keep them, but that only works if no other NBA team attempts to sign the player to an offer sheet. The Knicks obviously have the resources to match any offer, but, considering Donnie Walsh's goal to not compromise his salary-cap situation for the summer of 2010, it is not a given the Knicks will want to make a long-term commitment to either young player. NY Newsday
There is little doubt that Walsh will try to move Zach Randolph, who has a hefty contract that maxes out at $17.1 million in 2010-11. That could create room for Lee or it could result in Lee being part of the package to sweeten the deal. NY Newsday
