Outside of N.America, the rest of the world could care less about SW. I emigrated to Canada in the mid-90s and had no idea why people were high about it as it looked horribly dated and there were better TV/movies since then. The video/computer games at the time were quite good though. There was a ton of hype about the Lucas prequels which ranged from mediocre to slightly above average then there was another long hiatus.

FWIW, different cultures have different movie tastes. There's also the fact that this movie pushes the female protagonist agenda a bit too hard and it may not sit with viewers there.
As lame as I think most Star Wars movies are (I like the video games a lot more), this is not true. Star Wars is pretty popular throughout Asia. For example, Japan's main airline ANA has Star Wars themed planes, while Singapore has huge Star Wars exhibits everywhere. My mom said a lot of people used to skip work and school in the late 70s/80s whenever the movies came out. It's not as popular as it is in the US, but it's hardly "they couldn't care less".

Also looking at the numbers of the domestic/international split, it's about 50/50. People outside of America definitely care at least a little bit about Star Wars.

LOL Star Wars is EXTREMELY big in Japan and China and the rest of Asia.
For those that don't or haven't visited Asia, how can you have an opinion?
LMAO
You will find Star Wars key chains in the most random corner store in the most random alley. Star Wars is HUGE bro.

Vader always been my homie

Finally saw it last week. Usually go on opening night, but what I was hearing about the movie made me pause this time.

So they decided no powerful male heroes?

Poe get demoted by one female, then put in his place by another.
Kylo already weaker than Rey, but now he is super emo and looks like a whipped puppy in most of his scenes.
Luke has given up on life and is a useless hermit despite still being the most powerful Jedi at that point in the movie.
Finn can't even decide to commit suicide without a female overruling him. Then she CLAIMS him. Man don't even get to decide his own romantic interests. Plus he has to be saved at the end by Rey along with all of the other men.
Even the First Order brass are made to look like idiots. Of course the females of the Rebellion are master strategists with the long game on lock.
Who even comes up with this stuff?

My hope for this movie was that Rey goes darkside with Kylo. Finn discovers force sensitivity and takes out Rey and eventually has the showdown with Kylo who should be more powerful.

Instead Disney eyeing a market for pink lightsabers.

If I was on that woman hating anti-feminism steez I probably could see the arguments and that entire angle. After my 2nd watch I just felt that Holdo subplot was useless.

The movie wasn't good to Poe at all so I walked away thinking lesser of the character so I can't chalk it up to women cutting him down. He was on some stupid ****.

I've seen/read enough space war stories to know Rian could've came up with better inner conflict and execute it better.
I mean, what's left?
TFA they killed off the last real man in the franchise with Solo.
TLJ cut the lightsabers off all the men. Ep IX gonna be set in Themyscira.
 You making me laugh though.

It wasn't that bad, but you know what I mean. How about some balance? Wasn't a Poe fan from TFA but went into this telling myself to give him a chance. He seemed a little manic. Totally thought Finn was stepping up and he got turned into a side story. Guess it just caught me a little off guard being so different from my expectations. Maybe this is what the audience wants to see.:ohwell:

Good find, but vid title is misleading. He still just reiterated the fact that an an Actor, job was to portray what the writer/director wanted. The BIGGER issue that gets me is what Johnson said-don't think he ever saw a story line with Luke off the Island. The Force projection power was impressive, but a copout. Q died against Maul, Obi died against Vader, Luke dying at the hand of Darth Emo would have been more Epic.

To the people lamenting the treatment of Poe, you know he was originally supposed to die at the beginning of TFA but the character tested well so they kept him around. He’s on borrowed time.

Why?

Why would it have been more epic?

Q vs Maul, Obi v Vader, Luke v Kylo........you guys have this need to keep seeing the same thing over and over and over again?

Young bad, kills old good. You need to keep seeing it, for it to be "epic"?

Luke did something never seen before in 9 films. That's not epic enough?

He needed to die by Kylo's hand, after you just saw Kylo kill Han, then Snoke, yet again, you need a third kill to really make it "epic"?

I mean, you guys call him Darth Emo, you mock him fighting against Rey, and Red Guards, etc, but you're gonna be alright with him washing Luke Skywalker? Seriously?

Earlier today I read someone say it was "Luke's time to shine..........."

As a 60 year old man?

We already saw Luke's time to shine. 77, 80, and 83.

Do you guys want 7-8-9, or 4-5-6 remastered? Cuz it seems there's a lot of complaints about not seeing the same ole thing over and over again.

Leia floating, brand new power (in the movies) hated.
Lightspeed ship ram, brand new, hated.
"Gravity" bombs in space, brand new, hated.
Luke Force projection, brand new, hated.

Purple hair over Ackbar, I mean, damn. Anything different or new is getting crushed, except for some reason Phasma, who died the same as Fett, same as Jabba, same as Maul, way too soon with not enough backstory, THAT'S the one repeat move everyone gripes about. I just....

Remember I'm not one of those who have ever continuously complained about the details you just listed. Characterizing Kylo as "Emo" is not a stretch. But then any young over-emotional characters get on my nerves.
My only point was the movie plot was too narrowly focused. Have said never liked the idea that an Episode start right after previous one. Movie is one loooong chase scene that ends drag with a surface battle. That Seinfeld Costanza gif is brilliant. The casino scenes are a weak tangent.
Johnson backed himself into a corner by making Luke stay on Island entire movie.
Yes I wanted Skywalker off the stupid Island. Whatever Jedi power you show I'm cool with. Staying on Ship and Island was terrible idea. And yes I wanted Kylo to be BMF like the last movie. If that means killing another important character so be it. Makes the kid even more compelling.

This frustrates me too. People complaining just to complain. THERE ARE LEGITIMATE ISSUES with the movie,
but these little cry for "something else" just sounds childish to me.

I get that the plot has issues, character development issues, etc.
But specifically wanting something the way you imagined it happening is totally pointless.
This is not Harry Potter or GoT where you can get mad because there's an ACTUAL BIBLE
of information in the books. In Star Wars, anything new they do is canon and possible.

Not talking about anyone specific, but this has just been the theme this past month.
Oh Leia Poppins? Everything about Luke?
You really want ANH 2.0 again? Luke is found and is plucked away to fight a war... again.

Nah fam nothing wrong with your assessment. The lack of continuity for the second part of a trilogy has been discussed to death. If the audience consisted of movie critics and half of the audience then sure, then they got what they wanted.
