I'll start using the foam roller on the glutes.

My back flares up when I do any kind of squatting. I really think it's the butt winking, which I'm trying to work on getting rid of. Maybe I'm going a hair too deep

I do have problems with my lower back which flare up pretty bad at times which is why i havent squatted either

but my gym went all out with the bumper plates and individual platforms and what not so i kinda wanna start deadlifting and take it easy. Im usually pretty good at learning and get form down pat very quick. I might do a few sets tonight to get a feel for it and see how my lower back reacts to it.
Unless you have an actual injury, it sounds like a cop out to me.What do you mean by flare up? You have a herniation that flares up? or just soreness?

I had lower back surgery in 4/2012 and am back to pulling 365 for reps. I am smart about it though, as anyone with a shaky back should be. I didnt start DLing until over a year after. Started at 135 and didnt move up until I could rep them out in volume without any pain. I've progressively moved up and made it to where I am now. Could I pull 405-425? Yes. But I'm not pushing it just to stroke my ego. Just be smart and youll be fine.

Same can be said about squatting. I started back squatting using a 25 lb DB doing goblet squats. Worked on those for months till I felt comfortable and then got back under the bar. I'm back up to 225 lbs and have no intentions of going up until I can get quite a bit more volume out.
 
Anyone ordered anything from bulksupplements.com before? Thinking about trying out their bulk BCAA powder (which will taste bitter and disgusting, oh well) and their 90% whey isolate (which will also probably taste like crap).
 
Any of you guys get a really tight back whenever squatting and deadlift? Maybe it's my form but I always make sure my core is stable whenever I'm doing these exercises.

Mostly happens during high volume and intensity.


I have this problem...more when deadlifting than squatting

For someone who's so keen on supplements, I'm surprised you're not doing the 2 best exercises one can do at the gym

i rarely even use supps

protein from food>>>>from a plastic tub

like ive mentioned before i take em post workout if that. but of course i still want it to taste good.

ive mentioned it before. whos trying to cop out? ive mentioned my back issue on here for years. i suffered with horrible sciatica with no relief of pain for almost 2 years and still managed to lift here and there (back when i wasnt a serious lifter) and still played basketball few times a week and 2 leagues and the pain was unbearable but i couldnt stand sitting or laying in bed all day.

my lower back gets screwed up some days just by lifting weights around on chest day just like last week and the pinching pained lasted for 3-4 days with no relief til it randomly went away on sunday.

im not making excuses but im still in the gym 4-5 days a week even when my back starts killing me. theres a reason why i stay away from squatting even though ive tried to get back into it multiple times and as recently as 2 months ago.

no excuses here, im still in the gym and lifting but i avoid workouts that i know will do more harm than good at the moment. im still getting gains tho so i dont care.

Didnt mean to throw shade. I remember seeing you mention your back hurting just not exactly what was wrong. If you have a herniated disc though why the hell have you not taken the time to properly rehab it? It will never go away for good if you continue to lift that often and dont rehab it or give it time to heal. I'd go see a doc or PT for treatment otherwise you'll eventually make it worse then won't be lifting a damn thing.

Another thing.. neglecting to work out the area and strengthen it may add to or perpetuate the problem. I've noticed the more aggressive I've been with strengthening my lower back and core, the less pain i've experienced in the long run.

As of late, the pinching pain as been coming and going every few weeks and it's only gonna get worse. I'm gonna set an appointment soon with my new doctor and see a good specialist because you are right, down the road I'm gonna be screwed

Did they do an MRI? If they didnt, they are just speculating as to what the problem is. Even if they did, try to get an updated one.

A good PT will do wonders depending on how bad it is, but it doesnt sound like youre at the point of no return. Mine was keeping me from working, lifting, screwing, and everything in between. People dont understand back pain until theyve experienced sciatica. I used to say that if someone told me I had to live with it for the rest of my life, I'd kill myself. I was pretty serious too, it was fin miserable. There is light at the end of the tunnel though, you just gotta give it time and lay off the weights for awhile. I opted for a discectomy because it was minimally invasive and seemed like the only answer. A lot of older guys told me I was in for trouble having surgery at 24 but I didnt have many options. I woke up from the anesthesia and could already feel relief. I have not regretted it for even a second. Yes, I basically had to start over with the weights but it is what it is. Two simple things you can do that may help are dead hangs and an inversion table. Dead hangs anywhere, and inversion tables can be found on CL for dirt cheap; I've talked to a lot of people who swear by them too. Let me know if you have any questions, I learned quite a bit from the experience.

I've been meaning to check out a doctor but it's hard getting to my doctor since I'm at school and always on the move. Might have to schedule an appointment next time I'm home.

Sounds like a cyst. Backs are a common place to get them. I had one on the back of my neck for years. Had it removed a year or so ago because it was unsightly and I was getting back into squatting. They may just tell you not to worry about it. If you want it removed though, just say it is painful and they will remove it- may even do it in the office lol. Im a **** though, i went under for mine.

Do you know what the official diagnosis from the doctor was?

It only hurts if I'm laying down on a hard surface or if I'm sitting in a chair where the back hits it.

Doesn't a cyst contain fluid though? This one is legit tissue. Like a muscle. I don't want to jump the gun and say it, nor do I believe it is, but it does have the properties of a tumor.
 
I don't remember, but he blew it off like it was nothing. Just tissue build up. Mine doesn't hurt at all though, so if yours does when you apply pressure on it, it might be different. 

Mine has actually gotten smaller since I first noticed it.

It doesn't necessarily contain fluid. Mine was a sebaceous cyst and was hard as if it were tissue. You cannot just pop these kind and I wouldn't advise trying. They have to remove the whole thing bc once it is this developed it is contained within a sac. Look it up online and you'll see everything you need to know.

I injured my back almost 5 months ago. Went for an MRI about 2 months back and have 2 herniated discs. Completely stopped deadlift and squats to let my back heal. The sciatica is killing me though. It's been getting bad that I'd wake up 2-3x at night from the pain whenever I sleep on my side. Been going to the chiro once a week to get some infrared therapy and some good stretches. It's slowly getting better now..but I still feel the tingling pain down my left left whenever I first sit or get up.
