Stephen A. Smith Wylin

Feel like the idea of “marketing” is outdated nowadays. With the internet, cell phones and social media, everything and everyone is reachable nowadays. That old style of marketing is outdated.

What’s worse is, If dude spoke English but if spoke bad English, they’d criticize him even more

but wasn't stephen a smith clowning him because he was bad at basketball ..

Nah, It was much deeper than that.

That is where it STARTED but he kept dude's name on his lips for 20 years, so it was no longer just about him not living up to expectations.

But That is the "excuse" that SAS uses. "I was just talking about basketball."

Either way, he has ran his mouth about black folks for years and never apologized.

I think all SAS was saying is that Baseball already has a hard time marketing its stars (See Mike Trout), so Ohtani having an interpreter doesn't help his profile.

Thats a true statement. I think people just don't like SAS's crude delivery.

If you look at J Balvin and Bad Bunny and talk about who is more relatable to English speaking fans- the answer is J Balvin because his English is significantly better than Bad Bunny's even though Bunny is in my opinion at least, significantly more talented of an artist.

To Ichiro's point about why he continues to use an interpreter- I understand his point 100%.

Thats the nature of the beast when you come to the states from elsewhere.
If Skip Bayless had said “you know...it’s a problem for (black player X speaking in ghetto slang) is bad for the league” what would you have said then? Asking a legitimate question.

Why don't people ever get mad at the producers of these hot take shows when something is said?

You guys know they have meetings about what is going to be discussed prior to going live.

The graphics that accompany the talking heads while on screen are also an indication that Stephen A didn't just go off script and surprise everyone with his take.

It was discussed, possibly rehearsed and approved.

I saw that SAS was trending and was expecting to see a clip of him saying "Shohei is in America so he needs to speak English!" But that's not what he said. If that was what he said then I think the blowback would be warranted.

People just want to have something to be mad about even when it doesn't make sense to be upset.
Did you get mad at Rachel Nichols bosses or at her? Did you stop and try to justify “what Rachel meant?”

you can’t have it both ways. Try and be objective

For the record I think both are idiots

Are you trying to compare an accidentally recorded convo to a live on the air broadcast?

What does a jealous and entitled woman have to do with what Stephen A said today?

😂

Stephen A ham-fistedly stated something that is true about MLB and it’s failures to market superstars.

His timing was bad and the way he stated it was lacking nuance.

He did not attack the merits/ of Ohtani or any of his people.

If you have any further questions make sure to take context into account in this little baiting routine you’re running.

You’re ignoring the context of the Stephen A thing entirely in an effort to try to tell me “If it was said about a Black player, you’d think differently” [as if you know me or something 🤣].

I really wish the video of Stephen A walking off the set after another terrible mid-2000s Knicks loss still existed. This would have been 2005-ish, maybe? Knicks had been on national TV (I think) and got their doors blown off. ESPN did a real postgame show, and SA walked off set without talking. It's one of the most hilarious moments of his career.

That’s some Kellyanne Conway style deflecting. Nice!

RE: Ohtani

Stephen A. simply echoed the sentiments of many older baseball guys. Is it morally "right"? Of course not. Is it a truthful representation of how some people think? Yes

I'm not a baseball fan, but a good example of this in basketball is Giannis. When he was first projected to be an MVP candidate, I can remember his English improving significantly, almost overnight. I don't think it was a coincidence - I'm sure he had someone in his ear telling him to speak a certain way for "marketability".

On a related note, Cowherd had an even more racist take on Latino baseball players a few years back and somehow got past it. Smh.

This is bit of a stretch here. His english was pretty good before he broke out.

That was a wild take by SAS.
Never understood the learn english nonsense with players who dont speak it well/use a translator. To you as a writer, who cares? How does his/her ability to speak english effect what they do on their court/turf/field? No you say wild **** like that so you can bait them into answering questions they dont want to, or so you can totally take their comment out of context. Most sports writers are nothing but entitled pieces of crap. Just look at the high horse they sit on at the baseball HOF.

Stephen A this isnt your first time saying outlandish **** and tbh you should be gone. Dont know how you get enough viewers to command a 12mm per yr salary. And when you eventually leave, take Rachel Nichols out with ya.

It was about him being the face of baseball and marketing the sport in America,

lol he might actually get cancelled this time. was at the gym this morning and his show started, they started w/ the otani segment and no highlights of the HR derby.

He's not getting canceled, they've been saying the same thing about latino players for decades when several of them didn't learn English. Because they didn't care about being stars here. Vlad Sr used to get it.

el presidente el presidente brought up Colin Cowherd's comments on his way out from ESPN. Go look up Cowherd's statements. Nothing happen to Cowherd besides vacation days on his move to Fox. Who brings that up?

But it's been ok to make comments about latinos, hell we had a president who did it and used it to get elected.
