The College Basketball Post

Bo Ryan will never beat teams great teams playing the way he does,

this year may be his best shot because of unusual high level of talent that Wisconsin has but even the I doubt.

He's too conservative to beat big time schools with more talent.
normally i agree with you, but im not sure about that comment

most of the ranked teams they play have more talent, its been that way since hes been here

his regular season record against the top 25 is 50-46 at Wisconsin in 13 seasons

thats pretty good considering the talent he works with in any given year...and he plays a brutal non-conference schedule almost ever year, they actually go out and play people unlike most bigger schools

Duke, Arizona, Michigan State, Florida etc are all teams he's beaten

i never understood why people say hes too conservative of a coach..he can only work with what hes got, if he played an uptempo style theres not a chance in hell they finish in the Top 4 in the Big Ten and play in the NCAA tournament each of his 13 seasons..but they have..its not being conservative so much as playing to his team's strengths and why he stresses fundamentals

now this year he finally has a team with a little more skill and guess what, hes letting them play...they push the ball, take open shots early in the shot clock, score in transition, get to the foul line...and as a result scoring is higher than in any other season under him

the only knock against Bo is his record in the NCAA tournament, and for that i have no argument..but no team has won a chip (except '02 Terps) without a McDonalds All-American since that game started..not too many of those suiting up for Wisconsin...Brian Butch and Sam Okey are the only ones that even come to mind...i guarantee if he had elite level talent, tournament success would be far greater

I honestly think the Johnnies have an awesome chance to put a hot streak together and win the Big East tourney but on the flipside I wouldn't be suprired if they lose to Seton Hall or some **** first round. They play to their opponents talent level.

Can't wait for that 1-16 performance from D'angelo vs. Villanova prolly :{

Bo just gets way more out of his players than any other coach does. It's not even an argument.

Would love to see what he could do with the talent these other elite programs get.

all depends on what you value, no doubt Bo's style will allo for more consistent sucess repeated tourney appearances.

but ultimately if you want to beat teams that are better than you, and all the numbers bare this out, you have to play a riskier style of basketball.

shooting threes
pressing, forcing turnovers
offensive rebounding.

while this increase the chance you may loose by a lot its increase your chance of beating teams that have more talent then you.

VCU did this, Butler did this, Belmont, its why you don't want to face Minnesota in the tournament this year etc etc

I understand if college fans value consistent conference success, over a greater chance of upsetting a traditional basketball power. Bo has more talent then he usually has so this is his best shot.

But the reality it will always be tough for a Bo Ryan underdog to beat a squad with more talent, and once they face that team in the sweet 16 or elite 8 the smart money is on wisconsin loosing.

Getting beyond excited for the tournament.

If Arizona gets the #1 in the West region, I'll be able to see their first two games in San Diego & the Sweet 16/Elite 8 in Anaheim. Traveling with the team all the way to Texas to cut down nets :hat :hat :hat :hat :hat

AAC: Louisville

If Izzo can keep his team playing like they did last night from here on out, watch out.

Bo Ryan is a great regular season coach. Fantastic. Wake me up when he doesn't underachieve in the tournament.

I don't know if he always underachieves in the tourney, because I don't think his teams have ever really been that great in the first place.

He usually does it with smoke and mirrors.

I'd say more times than not, he completely overachieves in the regular season, and then they are who they are in the tournament format.

KU gonna struggle at WVU today. No Embiid, early east coast start, almost nothing to play for....wouldn't be surprised if they took an L.
