The Major League Baseball Offseason Post

26. Nationals: They have the best prospect in the game in No. 1 draft pick Stephen Strasburg, plus solid talents in catcher Derek Norris, right-hander Drew Storen and shortstop Danny Espinosa. Beyond that, though, the Nats have very little help, especially at the upper levels, which is a pity considering the state of the big-league roster.

LIES, the Natinals have the best system. Every player is a beast

30. Astros: Houston has added solid talent in its last two first-rounders, catcher Jason Castro (2008) and Jiovanni Mier (2009), as well as '08supplemental pick Jordan Lyles, a promising right-hander. But the Astros' system is full of holes -- it hasn't produced a team with a winning recordsince 2007.
where the last couple drafts have been better, it might get real ugly real soon. Im hoping we can have a fire sale and rebuild the system some through that

It's an outright travesty that the Jays were not awarded the distinction of being the worst farm system in baseball even though we bambouzled the reds forScott Rolen the pitchers we got back have labrum tears written all over there mechanics.

Our best prospect is a 5 foot 5 reliever Tim Collins.

Nobodies system is worse than Houston's...

I read a couple weeks ago they might have 2 or 3 guys that would crack the Rangers Top 15-20...

On the subject of preospects how many articles do I have to read saying Jesus has zero chance to stick at catcher before Yankee's realize he is worthlessto them, because last time I checked Marke Texeria signed a pretty long contract and will stay at first base, and the DH will be a revolving door for the oldgeezers that populate their roster so where is Jesus going to take his 6'4 230 pound frame?

To the Blue Jays first base position obviously.

Rangers willing to trade Millwood...

Should be interesting, given that it's been reported they've received calls from several teams already this offseason...

Trade Milwood and use that cash to bring in your oft-injured frontline starter and a right-handed DH? Yes, please.
Sources: Penny, Cardinals agree
The St. Louis Cardinals and right-handed pitcher Brad Penny have agreed to a deal, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.

Penny's one-year contract is worth $7.5 million and contains $1.5 million in performance bonuses, according to sources. The deal is pending a physical, which will likely be done on Tuesday.

Penny, 31, signed with the San Francisco Giants late last season after being put on the waivers by the Boston Red Sox and going unclaimed. He went 11-9 with a 4.88 ERA in 30 starts in 2009.

The Red Sox signed Penny to a $5 million, one-year contract last winter after he spent four-plus seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Penny is 105-84 in 10 major league seasons. He was a fifth-round draft pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 1996.

Probably because of the success he had in his short stint with the Giants.

Yo, do the Mets not have as much money to spend as I think they do? I feel like they have it, just don't spend it for whatever reason. A friend of mine, aMets fan, says they don't, and that is why he always says the Yankees are %%%@+

....all because we have the money to spend and we do it.

Can't believe he got that money

Maybe they think he is guy who can really do well in the NL?

Because he $#+!*$@ sucked in Boston

Penny is bi-polar it wasn't really that bad a deal. It was only a couple year ago dude was the starting pitcher at the all-star break for the NL. I thinkhe is the type of guy who will do well in St. Lousi especially because he will be placed comfortably behind Carpenter and Wainwright.

He was great three years ago... But coming off two years where he's got more than 40 starts of TERRIBLE pitching and a stretch of 5 quality starts outta 6late last year, he got no business signing a contract worth $7.5M guaranteed...

7M for Wagner, 7.5M for Penny?

Dumb baseball moves, especially since they were first offers.

What do you mean??? Its been confirmed for a few months that TLR and Dave Duncan were coming back.

He did pretty good with the Giants and im SURE that DD can look at his games the past few years and figure out what his problem was, if it hasnt already beenfixed by going back to the NL and the pitching coach in San Fran.

We`ll see what happens............I still wanna know what we will be doing with Smoltz

The problem isn't mechanical. The problem is that Penny is a lazy ***@!+%$$*$#,

.

This dude was always a beast in the first half, and then tailed off in the second. His work ethic was bad, he liked to party and drink and chase skirts.

Dude could be something special if he applies himself, the problem is he doesn't apply himself.

He was motivated with the Giants.
Mariners On Verge Of Signing Chone Figgins
By Tim Dierkes [December 6, 2009 at 6:33pm CST]

SUNDAY, 6:33pm: Geoff Baker of The Seattle Times says Figgins will take his physical tomorrow, and assuming he passes, the team will announce the signing either later in the day or on Tuesday. Baker says probably the latter.

FRIDAY, 10:03pm: Not sure if this moves the story forward, but the AP says the Mariners and Figgins have a preliminary agreement on a four-year, $36MM deal.

9:21pm: Brown tweets that "Angels officials concede (that) Figgins (is as) good as gone to M's."

9:04pm: Stark says that the two sides are "very close" to finalizing a deal. He adds that Figgins would be guaranteed $36MM over four years, and there are indications that the deal will include a vesting option that could push the value of the contract to $45MM.

Meanwhile, according to Bill Shaikin of The LA Times, Angels' GM Tony Reagins said that Figgins is close to a decision, one way or the other. "We've made an offer," said Reagins. They've had a chance to evaluate it."

6:52pm: Larry LaRue of The News Tribune says the Mariners need to wait until at least Monday to finalize the deal. Why Monday, you ask? Because that's the deadline for free agents to accept arbitration, and they have to make sure Adrian Beltre declines before proceeding with Figgins.

3:48pm: ESPN's Jayson Stark agrees that the Mariners are close to a deal with Figgins, but says financial terms are still being negotiated and the Angels "aren't completely out of the running." Meanwhile Shannon Drayer of ESPN Seattle says the deal is "all but done" but most likely will not be announced today.

2:50pm: Heyman now tweets that the Ms are "very close to getting Figgins." In a subsequent tweet he suggests the deal will be for about $35MM.

2:26pm: SI's Jon Heyman has a more open-ended take on Figgins, via Twitter - he has the player asking for $36MM over four years with the Mariners at $32MM over four or $27MM over three. He says the Angels are at $24MM over three. Similarly, Yahoo's Tim Brown has an Angels source who says, "We're still hanging around."

1:35pm: The Mariners are on the verge of signing Chone Figgins to a four-year deal in the $36MM range, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. His source says the sides are "very close" to a deal. In his original article Rosenthal left the door open for the Angels to make a late push to re-sign Figgins, but that portion has been removed.

If they complete the deal, the Mariners would surrender their #18 pick to the Angels unless they also sign one of the other remaining Type As who was offered arbitration (the Angels could still end up with that pick if the Ms sign John Lackey too).

Rosenthal's price range doesn't sound too crazy given the five-year, $50MM predictions that had been floating about. With Figgins and Jack Wilson on the left side of the infield, the Mariners' defense would be spectacular. Figgins also helps offensively, given his league-leading 101 walks this year.

Deal is all but done. I think the M's were just waiting for Beltre to decline arbitration.

this dude said Figgins was a Mariner 3 days ago, and there hasnt been anything official.
Too many reports saying deal is done pending a physical. Figgins has been a Mariner, IMO, since Friday.

Any of you peep this blockbuster:
Yanks, Tigers, D'Backs Discussing Blockbuster
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 7 at 11:23pm CST]

11:23pm: Joel Sherman of the New York Post hears that the Tigers were never satisfied with the blockbuster talks.

10:05pm: The D'Backs pushed for a blockbuster three-way deal with the Yankees and Tigers today, only to see one of those two teams veto it, according to Jon Paul Morosi and Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. However, the teams are discussing the following scenario.

The deal would send Curtis Granderson to the Yanks, along with a prospect or two from the D'Backs. Arizona would obtain Edwin Jackson from the Tigers and Ian Kennedy from the Yankees. The Tigers would obtain Max Scherzer from the D'Backs and Austin Jackson, Phil Coke and Michael Dunn from the Yanks.

Talks are apparently at an "impasse" now, though the D'Backs continue to push for a trade.
