If it comes down to it, I can hand over control of the topic post to a different user to ensure that it remains helpful and well updated.
Under normal circumstances, we require approval from the topic starter before taking that step, but, in this case, the user never claimed their account after the move to Huddler - and there will have to be some consideration before our relaunch about what to do with all those unclaimed accounts.
Changing control of the topic doesn't preclude anyone from starting a new thread. In fact, we may want to consider setting an expiration for "mega threads" to at least require a new one each year to keep things current and manageable. "Mega threads" can also create some performance issues as well, depending on how the system handles them. (Huddler doesn't handle them terribly well, for example.)
There's some value to having years' worth of history at your fingertips, but let's be honest: most people are not going to read through 1,000+ pages, let alone need to go back to page 500 and quote something. Keeping old threads locked and archived in "read only" mode doesn't really diminish their value as a resource.
In the meantime, if there's a consensus opinion on who should be assigned to the topic post for this thread, we can easily make that change.
