The Old PlayStation Thread | *NEW THREAD IS UP*

I just discovered that my tv is an 8 bit panel rather than the 10 bit that is required for the pro. You guys think it's still worth it to cop???. It still has hdr tho

So my pro didn't get delivered and Amazon is now saying it's going to be delivered on the 23rd :{

Going to try and get it somewhere else alongside an SSD.

This below is FFXV using a stock drive vs an SSD for the judgement demo.

Big improvement.

Also Digital Foundry took too long but at least we have some benchmarks on this site for Hard Drive speeds.

Not only are SSD'S much faster but games with pro patches take advantage of the SATA III interface as they are faster to load on an SSD on pro compared to an SSD on the OG PS4.
Anyone who prefers speed over capacity should be looking out for some SSD deals on black friday.

unless im misinformed i was under the impression HDR has to be a 10 bit panel hence HDR10.

What kind of tv do you have? You may not have HDR but you will still see the resolution difference.

Do you know if it's just 8 bit or 8 bit + FRC?

If it's the latter then you can still get the wider colour gamut for HDR. It won't be as good as a 10 bit panel though but better than a standard HDTV.
Also the pro will still be worth it for the resolution bump.

When I play the last of us on my regular PS4. A message comes up saying '' an HDR video is playing". The box from the tv says it has HDR premium

I would have to check but on the box where the tv came in it says it has HDR premium. I don't get it tho.on the Xbox website it says that HDR Premium is also another name for HDR 10

i would say this is more for the people who dont have a ps4 already but have a 4k tv. Your tv is already upscaling to 4k and you are already seeing HDR. So the bump would be modest is what im thinking I already seen multiple 4k BR HDR movies and compared to 1080P BR and that bump in clarity is good but not everyone can tell the difference if you dont know what too look for.

Im contemplating on buying it aswell seeing i already have a 4k BR player i can live without the pro having one. My main concern is i dont want to pay full price for a moderate at best bump in specs you can barely see across all games im sure it will get better over time. Im trying to trade in my 500GB with a couple games and be out the door no more than 200 out of pocket. But with the scorpio dropping next year i think that will be the true 4k native gaming console to wait on

Is it true that the pro doesn't do true native 4K gaining? Oh well I have no choice since I still wanna play Sony exclusives. I'll probably trade in my Pro for the Scorpio next year if it's that big of a difference.

I believe some games that arent too GPU intense will run 4k native on the pro, like those indy games. But majority of the games will be upscaled like the XB1S is doing. I see 4k gaming coming late 2017 early 2018 for consoles GPU cards that do 4k native in PC's are still selling for $400+ just for the card. Sony is trying to sell you on something your high end 4k tv is already doing for you.

What im debating on if the pro is worth it money wise. Im looking at it like this. If i trade in my 500GB PS4 with 2 games and 1 controller im looking at close to 220 at GS. I could take that now and put that towards the pro and pay out the door maybe 200. When the scorpio drops next year hopefully my pro resale will be high because i already know if i keep this launch edition ps4 and try to trade it for a scorpio next year than it will more than likely drop from 150 trade in vaule currently. Than i will pay more out of pocket later when im ready to upgrade.

So far im finding GS and Amazon being the most you can get currently for a 500 gb ps4

the last of us does look brighter to me on my tv lol or maybe I'm trippin. All this HDR stuff is kind of confusing to be honest. I thought of the one s since it does 4K gaming as well but these Sony exclusives keep me from switching especially MLB the show

I would have to agree with HDR being confusing. I bought my first 4K tv in 2014 and second one in 2016 after finding out my first one didnt have HDR. :{

But now after being a test subject for 4k now for 2 years i would say i will no longer be upgrading anything beyond 4k theres too many bugs with the current model and HDR still has plenty of bugs across all 4k TVs and BR players. HDR Its still in its in infancy stages and i think by the time they iron out all those bugs they have dynamic HDR coming out soon and your current tv will not support it causing another upgrade and Dolby Vision will be the future standard for HDR10 im thinking.

Bioshock is so good

I can't stop playing it

Is there a point for using first aid kits?

Sometimes I just die and respawn close by which seems better than using a first aid kit

Do you lose anything when you die?

yeah true especially since I just bought this tv 3 months ago for $1000 bucks lol. I feel bad for my friends that's bought lower quality 4K tvs just to play the ps pro. Like flossy carter says i guess you gotta pay to play

yup and if you dont do your research before buying and opt to purchase one of those low cost 4k tvs you will see eventually what you purchased.

I know Ultra HD Premium is a standard used my manufacturers and the panel has to be 10 bit for it to be that standard.
I haven't heard of HDR premium though.

It is confusing because some TV's can accept HDR signals but don't have a wide colour gamut to show for it. I would also check if your TV spec says wide colour gamut.
What model is it?

Sony calls it "Dynamic 4K". Not all games are 4K but some of the remastered titles like TLOU and Skyrim are. 2K17 and FIFA 17 are also as well alongside a handful of indies.

The pro is doing a lot more than a TV's or Xbone S upscaler which upscale from 1080p or lower to 4K.

The pro depending on how it's used renders at a resolution higher than 1080p then uses checkerboard rendering or other techniques to get it to 4K.

Most games i've seen are rendering at 3200 x 1800p and then checkerboarding that to 4K which is 3840 x 2160p.

So while 1800p is not native 4K, the games look good still on a 4K TV because of the high resolution the pro is pushing and then techniques used to get it to 4K before being outputted on the screen.

If you do the math 3200 x 1800p is 4 times the resolution of 900p which a lot of games on current consoles run at. Mainly more on the Xbone but even stuff like the dice games run on 900p on PS4. So you can use that as a sort of metric even though not every game will use the same technique.

yes i understand the algorithms and techniques the ps4 is using to get you to 4k but cant we agree that not all TVs, receivers, and BR players are using the same techniques but all get you to the end result which is up scaled 4k?

I made a statement that my 4K BR players is doing this aswell. Alot of 4k BR movies that are out today are 2k DI from the studios and upscaled using some algorithm to get it to 4k on BR. Again its not 4k native and yes the resolution they are up-scaling from let it be 2k or 900P (PS4) is high and good too but still its not native and its still up scaled and you are not getting the best picture you can get if its rendered at 4k and outputting native 4k.

Yea you're right. Without upscaling it'll just be a small picture in the middle of your screen with a big black border.

My point is that stretching from 1080p to 2160p or 4K will give you a significantly worse picture than stretching, checkerboarding or whichever technique from 1440p or 1800p to 2160p.

That's the main selling point for the pro. The fact it can render higher than 1080p so the final image will look better.

ok i see your point of view and understand stretching from a lower reso is not a good method. To ask a question about that process where is the pro getting the information to render at 1440p or 1800p to 4k?

to make my question clearer.

BF4 was 900P on the ps4 so if i pop that game in my pro will i be now rendering from 900p up to 4k or does these patches dropping for pro support giving you the 1440p or 1800p resolution and then the pro is rendering from there?

or whatever resolution ends up on any future games is where the pro will do its render,

so if a game drops in january called INDY with a resolution of 900p or 1080p the pro will render from those reso's?

Wow I'm definitely in the same boat and mindset as you regarding getting more by selling our current Ps4, getting the pro and having a higher resale to get the Scorpio.

And in regards to 4k TVs. I had a 5 year old 46" Panasonic plasma which I loved, but I wanted to take the leap to 4k. I know 4k, HDR, and even the HDR10 vs Dolby vision are in their infancy right now, so it doesn't make sense to drop $$$ on a high end 4k tv. There's a good chance this year's Samsung TV's are rendered a money pit if Dolby Vision wins the HDR war.

So what I ended up doing was getting the 2015 Samsung 55JS7000. It has Wide Color Gamut but sadly its HDR 8 bit. I think its a nice little stop gap (especially since I got a great deal on it) to let me experience 4k, "kindof HDR", while waiting for OLED's to become mainstream.

I predict I'll upgrade my TV in 2-3years. p.s. The 55" LG OLED is currently being sold for $1500, so I can definitely see a 55"OLED being sold for around $1000k next year.
