The Oscars: 2024's 96th Academy Awards, 7:00pm March 10th ABC

Yeah he didn't have to go there. I don't even mess with the superhero sh*t and I thought it was OD

He didn't want to go there. But he was asked about his opinion on superhero movies, and he gave it. He didn't actively speak out against superhero movies. It seems to me that the man was sticking to a "If you can't say anything nice, then don't say anything at all" principle, until a journalist asked him about his opinion about superhero movies. So he could either express his true feelings or flat out LIE in an attempt to leave as few people butt-hurt as possible.

Obviously, he failed to accomplish that. As a result, you have random, butt-hurt Internet posters calling arguably the greatest and most respected director in history for a "clown".

I read the comments and thought there was a "holier than thou" vibe. He actually referred to them as theme parks, which I thought was a little condescending.

Of course he's entitled to his opinion. I just thought he could have handled it with more tact, considering those are his peers and he's trivializing their craft.

Still wild to me that a Korean black comedy won Best Picture/Best Director/Best Original Screenplay :hat

The Academy trying to win me over again

He definitely didn't insult superhero movies as a craft. But he did say that he doesn't consider them to be art.

If you aren't prepared for someone's honest opinion on something, then don't ask them what their opinion on that thing is, like that reporter asked Marty.

The majority of superhero movie craftsmanship IS artistic though. So it's difficult to separate those two statements.

Would be like saying "I appreciate rap as a craft, but it's not art."

But I digress. It's his opinion and he's entitled to it. I disagree is all.

Martin Scorsese is almost 80. Who cares what his opinion is, but he's entitled to it.

I hear worse hot takes from people who haven't accompished 0.00001% of what he has in Hollywood.

People can't just disagree with people and move on.

Scorsese is out of touch when it comes to comic book movies but he's still the God Director and The Irishman was dope. If that's the worst thing you can say about your hero, that you disagree with his opinion, then that's not such a big deal. Of course, the irony in all of this is that one of the biggest comic book movies of last year was strongly influenced by his old movies. I don't think Joker could've been made without Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy already existing.

For people who don't like subtitled movies, I suggest watching all movies with subtitles. That's good practice.

I used to feel the same way about foreign movies..but then this year I fell deep inside a rabbit hole of Korean entertainment. It's to the point where my two favorite shows ever - ever - aren't English speaking. There's a world out there beyond hollywood for sure.
what shows?

am I the only one who watches English movies in subtitles too?

I do it to make sure I don’t miss anything
I watch everything except Sports, with Closed Caption on. If it didn’t get in the way of the play I’d watch a Sports with it on as well.
Definitely don’t want to miss anything but, I like to keep names straight and even spell them correctly when discussing openly in threads.

what shows?

Oh My Ghost and Welcome 2 Life

Oh My Ghost is about a depressed girl who gets possessed by a ghost who doesn't remember how she died.

Welcome 2 Life is about a lawyer that got rich defending criminals with deep pockets until he got into an accident and one day woke up in an alternate reality and got a change of heart.
