I havent looked into it more than just reading an article, but the first thought I had was the phrase "you're not crazy" was deliberate. I could just be feeling sensitive to it, but I think a person who works with words professionally knows what they're possibly implying with using that phrase vs simply saying you're not wrong.

Athletes got a lot of pressure so it's easy to be sensitive then and journalists don't really come with good intentions anyway...
