Tipping Vol. Why am I paying you extra to do your job?

I ALWAYS tip.

I work in a moving company - and I always appreciate a tip, anything is better than nothing.

I stay at 20% for waiters, little more if feeling froggy.

Tips mean the world, esp a broke college student like myself.

This is fact.  I'm half black/filipino and I tip, I always have, the stereotype of not tipping has always bothered me, so I tend to overcompensate.  My homie (who is also black) was a server in college and he currently bartends and he was telling me, it doesn't matter how big the bill is, black people only tip $5.

Some tips are crazy though. I was in Vegas a few years back and I got into it with one of the dudes outside the casino that do nothing but open your taxi cab's car for you. I didn't tip him, and he got smart and called me "classless". I told him that I didn't need him to hold the door open for me, I can do that for myself.

And honestly, I think it's just easier for restaurants to put the 15% or 20% into the bill before bringing it to you.

I have always wondered if you order TAKE OUT from a place, and you go to pick it up, should you tip them? All they did was put your food in the bag for you. The people at the drive-thru at McDonalds do the same thing, and no one tips them. They sure give you the receipt with the option to tip though....so honestly, I don't know.

naw im half asian, part white.... but im from the hood, no offense tho, but real talk Im just like OP idk the concept of tipping, they get paid to do they job, when i go to my job i dont get tips, why should i be tipping somebody?.. for bringing my food out cold etc.. n stuff

I haven't read all the previous post, but I work as a Valet at a few clubs around the city and we usually get tipped decent when we go above and beyond what we are suppose to do. I'll tell you why because most valets will wait for their customer to hand them a ticket, which then means go get the car. What we do is we usually will get the customers car before they even get to our desk (we only park on average about 30-40 cars) I'm not saying we do this for everyone, but the nice cars we usually remember and put them in spots where we can get the quickly. Now this works just about every time because most people will be surprised that you remembered and didn't make them wait for their car. I mean I agree with OP I don't like to tip everywhere, but I still do it because when you don't get tipped for doing good work feelsbadman. 
The whole thing about black people not tipping more than $5 is not true in ATLANTA. (predominately black if you never been here) Black people in atlanta spend the most money at the club and prices always go up on "urban nights" its pretty messed up tho.

I always thought the tip is given on how well they did their service. 
One time my dad took out some Mitsubishi executives for his company to this nice restaurant in Los Angeles that one of the executives liked and wanted to go to. The server hardly gave them any attention, was very cold to them, and just in general, embarrassed my dad in front of his clients. My dad figured out the server thought that since there were a bunch of foreign Asian middle-aged guys, they'd tip him well regardless of how good of a waiter he was towards them. After dinner, my dad left a very small tip, and the server quickly came up to him and tried to explain that my dad had to pay more for whatever reason. My dad pulled him off to the side and explained how he embarrassed his company and himself, and that he thought the tip was very fair for the service given and that the server had no right to ask for more when he did such a terrible job. The waiter then apologized and went away.

yeah I guess that story has something to do with the topic.

Waiters literally would make NOTHING if it wasn't for tips. If you can afford the service, then you can afford to show some gratitude to the person serving you.

Restaurants is different, the waiter/waitress is going to get a tip from me, bad service or excellent, sure the tip is going to vary on how well their job was done, but they're still going to receive something from me.

If my drink gets refilled as soon as I finish or before I finish it, Im happy. If my food is hot and tastes good, Im happy. If the waiter doesnt get in my face every 2 seconds about how good my meal is, Im happy. Point is, if I am properly served then I will tip accordingly. Its not about rules its about what you think.
