To my NT agnostics/atheists/Antons

Nah that was meant for the dude above you that asked why atheists wouldn't pray. You were just the most recent person to quote him

I can't follow a book that a MAN wrote just because he said God/gods inspired him...

My family stopped going to church together after I was around 8. I haven't gone since, my dad still occasionally goes but he's not really the type of person that would care what someone else thinks. I'm pretty sure my mom and sister are at least agnostic as well. The conversation has literally never come up. It's the 21st century, this shouldn't be an issue.

I think my parents think I follow Buddhism. Not sure they care since they're not religiously practicing their faiths but I have heard my dad reference the bible many a time when talking about homosexuals.

Either way I find my quest for truth and the right way to live life to be a personal and individual one, not to be concerned with family or loved ones. If they want to discuss ideals and philosophical views like I do here, then that'd be fine but I'm not informing them of anything for their acceptance or just so they can know.

FTR, I'm agnostic. Still deciding if I'm agnostic theist or agnostic atheist.

My sisters know. Well, I think my mom kind of knows. I have dropped hints here and there and once we were having an argument about something in Islam and then she says to me, "Well what do you believe in then?". I just shrugged telling her I did not want to talk about it. She cried! She started blaming herself saying it is her fault she did not raise me more religiously and how God will judge her for not instilling it into me. She just does not understand the fact that it does not matter how much conditioning and brainwashing of doctrines, values, and beliefs you put into your children, it does not mean they will attain to them once they get a mind of their own. So, ever since then, I have had to play along and pretend like I follow Islam.

My dad will sometimes yell out comments to me how I do not know my God which basically means I have no guidance in life.

Oh baba, how I love him.

It's not that I don't believe in God, I just don't ascribe to the conventional views or beliefs we has the human race hold today as fact. I find that religion serves as the ultimate tool to keep man from advancing. The kicker is that no one really knows, yet we've somehow come to the conclusion that we are above logic and know the truth as if we've personally met a deity.

I find that it's easy to not hold myself to the standards of any religion. I have common sense and what I believe to be sound judgement, which I believe are some of  the ultimate gifts we have as humans. I don't need a book written by other men to tell me right from wrong.
But that's because you learned right from wrong as a child from your parents. 2000 years ago the Bible and the fear of God was the optimal tool to teach morality to everyone.

Well, my parents told me homosexuality was wrong, and it's not, is it?
My parents know very well of my "views"

I get into arguments with my grandfather, stepdad, and mom all the time. But they know that they can't change my mind.

I always bring out the fact that I read the whole bible 2-3 times as a whole, certain sections more, during my religion and theology courses throughout my life and I just doubt everything in it. They get mad but they really have no way to fighting that other than "you don't know that there isn't a God." And it just ends there. My grandfather is the worst though. He acts like he knows everything yet he has no proof either way and never read the bible. But that's old people, set in their beliefs.

With that said I still believe in God, but not the $#** that churches and the average idiot Christian spew out on a regular basis.
Couldn't of said it any better.

1. Yes
2. Randomly when I wouldnt pray before dinner. It was very tragic.
i dont understand this lol
y r people who dont believe in god so against praying
Well, if one doesn't believe in a god, wouldn't it seem silly trying to communicate with an imaginary being? Whether you're saying it aloud or not, praying means you believe there's someone on the other end who's listening to your thoughts.
If you don't like wrestling, would you watch it on television?
i'm not sayin u have to believe
example
if u walk into someone's house and they ask u to take off ur shoes u would do it out of respect
even though it maybe not be something u do at ur own house
same thing with pray just bow ur head for a min or 2 even if u dont believe
i had a friend that would always complain when other people would pray
i never understood it

Youre confusing the 2. I dont mind (and most people wouldnt either) if you pray. My mom prays before every meal. I have no problem with it. I even respect her and wait til she's done to eat. But in no way shape or form am I going to 'pretend' to pray to something I believe in.

You bring up the shoes in the house analogy which is ridiculous but I'll take the bait. What if I was your best friend and everytime you came to my house I had a statute of Satan and you had to rub the belly and thank him for all your blessings in your hand? Now of course you could always rub the belly and not think anything in your head, but why should you have to do that? That's my beliefs not yours. You shouldn't have to confirm to make me feel comfortable.

Dynamics82 you're not asking atheists to pray out of respect you're asking them to pretend to pray out of respect. You just seem to have a problem with those who voice their displeasure and refusal in the act of praying.

I stopped believing somewhere in high school... it didn't help that I had a catholic H.S. that liked to force-feed jesus stuff to the students. I really reacted badly to that, and realized that I really doubted everything about the Bible and I was just faking it for my mom.
When I told my mom I didn't care about Catholicism anymore, she said "it's nice to have something to comfort you, for instance when my grandmother died believing in God really helped me picture her in a better place."

So I always thought that maybe I would have a large conversion if someone close to me died... but my cousin died last summer, and I got even more bitter and angry. How could a "loving god" let my cousin die like that? A 32-year-old successful accountant in a Chicago firm about to get engaged to his longtime GF? Nah, it wasn't part of the plan, it's just that things happen. People die randomly and it's horrible, but it's part of life. There's no god up there calling the shots.

I used to be very angry and I used to love trolling people like mormons and witnesses, but I've been going to meditation lately and there we talk about forgiveness and peace and things like that... so I've accepted that people are different and will always have varying opinions on religion until the end of our existence.
