Wale, when will you blow up?

I think some people just don't understand just how long it can take to "blow." A lot of our favorite artists grinded for years before they madeit big. Look at Jay-Z:

DMX

50 Cent

Ja Rule

Robin Thicke

Bobby Valentino lol

Lauryn Hill

Wu-Tang

I can go on and on. But the point I'm trying to prove, these are all major stars now, but all those joints came many, many, years before they truly BLEW.Sure you have some flash in the pan artists that seem to blow overnight. But to really be serious, major, and BLOW...it takes time.

^^ good pt!

i really like his stuff though...i happened upon one of em on itunes a few months back. hopefully there are thousands like me who now know

Other joints ya'll might get a kick out of:

Common:

Nelly:

Fat Joe:

Missy (she's actually the one doing the reggae voice on the 2 minute mark, and not the person you see. Missy wrote this):
(doesn't have an embed link, but peep!!)

Clipse

Eminem. Song from his first album. Nope, not the Slim Shady LP. His REAL first album. This flow reminds me of Nas.

Juvenile

Mobb Deep:

The Roots:

Lloyd:

i remember when i first saw funeral...but they werent called the cclipse then it was just malice....i was like these dudes got skills....to bad these dudes gotraw deals...

it seems like no matter how much success Wale has, no matter how much music he gives away free, no matter how many ridiculous shows he does, no matter how muchhe keeps achieving things that are unprecedented for an unsigned artist, people are still hating and questioning

in the last 6 months this dude:
has toured Europe for 5 months with Mark Ronson (who just got nominated for 3 Grammy's and will win at least 1)

signed with Mark Ronson who will be producing and overseeing his album

been featured in THE FADER, front page Sunday Style section of The Washington Post, in ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY as one of 8 people to watch in 2008, in XXL Showand Prove, in Rolling Stone On The Edge, in Complex, in VIBE, in The New York Times, in The Boston Globe and on THE COVER OF URB MAGAZINE WITH JUSTICE!!! Imean, how many unsigned rappers get on the cover of a major music magazine with one of the biggest groups in the world right now?!

getting spins on WKYS, WPGC, XM Radio, Sirius, Power 106, Hot 97, Power 105...these stations are spinning to support, not cuz their parent companies told themto

is on the remix to one of the biggest songs of the year (Chris Brown/T-Pain "Kiss Kiss remix")

is on the remix to MIA's "Boyz" remix

is on a effing remix with Mary J. Blige and Maroon 5 produced by Mark Ronson

performed at the BBC Electric Proms with a 56 piece orchestra which was broadcast live in the UK

is featured on the BBC Radio 1 40th Anniversary compilation

performed at the VMA's BY HIMSELF! it wasn't like he was 50's hype man

has his own MTV You Hear It First

had Nike license one of his tracks for their website

had iTunes Single of the Week

has had over 25,000 people download his critically acclaimed mixtape 100 MILES AND RUNNING

got sponsored by Remy Martin

had a song prominently featured on ENTOURAGE

did a song with Rhymefest

got Lil Wayne on the Nike Boots remix for free

has done solo shows around the country

AND THIS IS ALL WITH NO RECORD DEAL AND NO PUBLICIST

if this isn't strategically "blowing up" I dunno what is. The fact that you are even wondering should tell you something. Is it safe to saythat the majority of your favorite rappers are or have been signed to a major label? and did you know about them before their first single? most likely no. The fact that Wale has an international fanbase, is doing solo shows around the country, has 2 million plays on myspace and almost 2 million page views shouldindicate that he is building himself a solid foundation so that when he does get the major label push, when he does have 4 singles on the radio, when he is ontour with ______, when it comes time to the VMA's, Grammy's, etc, everybody will know him and he will have blown up on a worldwide scale and he will bearound 10 years from now, pertinent as ever.

What were 3 of the biggest songs this past year? Umbrella, Party Like A Rockstar and Crank That right? go check the sales. Shop Boyz and Soulja Boy are nottouring. They are not selling out venues. People buy the single and the ringtone and that's it. People do not invest in them as artists.

Wale is blowing up in a new model for the music business. Not only that, he has done it at a pretty remarkable pace. Wale is going to the first artist on anew wave of artists whose success will not be defined in the way artists were judged as recently as 5 years ago.

He was offered his first record deal 7 months ago but passed because he did not want to become another Lil ____ or Yung ____. Now that he's finally gottenhimself to a place where he feels he will get the attention he deserves from a major, he is signing and the label will serve a purpose in filling in the gaps. He will record a classic album, go platinum, go on tour, win Grammy's and be mentioned with the greats in the next 2 years.

Stop hating and start participating if you don't wanna see hip hop die.

Only YUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU can prevent hip hop from dying

Very well stated Dan.

Yooouuuuu made some great points.

Wale is really doing some noteworthy things.

The world is bigger than Niketalk.

I've learned that via Everyday Pple.

Man,

I need a spokesperson that thoro. (although my "from where" comment wasn't address, "strategically" so, lol).

Any takers?

Tax free pay..........................

Siii...Siii... Syce It...

Well said, SD. Sadly, for some people they attribute success to having your video played a billion times on BET and hopping on everyone's remix. It'snot all about the flashing lights, people.

StockDead^ I was going to say the same thing verbatim but was too lazy too type allthat.
laugh.gif
...(except for the part of saving hip-hop from dying thats justridiculous)

At the end of the day Wale is a dope emcee making eclectic hip-hop touching on all facets.
Plus he reps D.M.V. to the fullest.

Just support and enjoy the music

It is what it is though.

Youngin' that made this thread asked, "When are you gonna blow?" And we all know the def. of what he meant?

And "DCShoeChick" broke it down the best -- it takes time, even posted videos -- but here comes one of Vic's partnas going e-wild over nothing.

And, as the same thing that went on less than 6 months ago, "StockDead" catches feelings when his man is brought up, but in flashing lights, by yourstruly.

Hater? Never.

If that's what you bammas call it, so be it.

No one needed dude's resume. Every one who is a fan (me included) is witnessing what's being done.

I'm one with a track in the bus. who clearly sees HOW it's being done, and I got my opinion.

Critical is critical. Good or bad.

And that's the problem.

His team of boys take "critically acclaimed" but ready to e-fight when someone is being critical on the other side.

Artists are sensitive. They are supposed to be. It's their work. They are artists.

The team though? Boooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Whatever.

When y'all change up, I will.

Until then, dude ain't topped "Dig Dug" yet.

And MANY agree with my stance in the "urea," you can lie to whoever you want overseas and get away with it.

I'm talking about HOME. You know, D.C. right?

If no one cared for dude, no one would be posting.

Take it for what it is and keep pushing.

Check.

Damn...knowing all of that, its still a damn good resume. better than any un-signed artist I know of...t

...no point though, even when its all said and done, people gone still have their doubts, critiques, hate, ect. ect.

success is in the eyes of the beholder. Close friends, supporters, including myself, of Wale feel he is already a success just because of the path he is headedin. We are all proud of him and his accomplishments...then you have cats who think, well does this cat have a dance? (
laugh.gif
) and thats what they deem success, the fact you have a certain type ofpublicity.

So, to answer the initial ? Wale will blow up when you think he blew up...what it will do for you? I dont know
ohwell.gif

The world is bigger than Niketalk.
there you have it...

the world is bigger than niketalk?

no way...

no efin WAY!

you mean to tell me that one can succeed outside of niketalk? i mean hell... i rep niketalk everyday of my damn life...

see?

lol.

So basically in review, we all wish him the best and have accepted the bad(people maybe?) with the good(music...). Good luck Wale.

Add something else to the list. I was just on the MySpace Music page and he's one of the featured artists.
