San Beda beats Letran in tense, incident-marred affair
SAN BEDA COLLEGE proved to be the more poised quintet down thestretch as it outlasted Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 79-74 in a heated encounter that saw benches clear after the final buzzer in NCAA Season 85 at theFiloil Flying V Arena in San Juan City last July 24.
The defending, three-time champions took the lead for good in a tight affair, 62-60, after a thunderous Sudan Daniel slam on the fastbreak. The Knightstried to claw back into the game, with Reymar Gutilban, RJ Jazul and Kevin Alas each hitting a triple each. However, with under a minute to go in the finalperiod, Bam Gamalinda hit an open triple that sealed the deal.

In the very last play of the game, however, tempers flared when Daniel, who grabbed a rebound, and Alas got entangled in what seemed to be a let-go play. Both benches cleared, with the two head coaches, Frankie Lim and Louie Alas, trying to break up what would have been a fistfight between the two sides.Bottles, coins and debris then came falling into the hardcourt as the fans also threatened to mix it up.

Lim said after the game, "It's really a tough game whenever we play Letran. They almost come prepared and they will really slug it out in everypossession." Alas, for his part, came rushing into the stands to cover his wife and two-year-old son from the carnage, as it were.

Daniel led Lim's troops with 18 points, with Lanete tallying 15. RJ Jazul paced the Muralla five in a losing cause with 19.

The scores:

San Beda 79 - Daniel 18, Lanete 15, Tecson 10, Gamalinda 9, Hermida 8, de la Rosa 6, Pascual 5, Caram 3, Marcelo 2, Tirona 2, Taganas 1.

Letran 74 - Jazul 19, K. Alas 10, Cortes 9, Belencion 9, Gutilban 7, Foronda 6, Guevarra 5, Malabago 3, J. Alas 3, del Rosario 3, Taplah 0, Datang 0.

Quarter scores: 19-18, 43-40, 58-60, 79-74.
