2010 NBA Trade Deadline thread

Ray will be a free agent this summer, while Caron has another year left and Jamison has another two or three years after this season.

So yes, they'll be taking on a lot of money.

Trades in the NBA don't necessarily have to be dollar for dollar. There's a 10 % rule that the combined salaries can be within 10% of eachother. So if it's combined 20mil on one side than the other side can be at 22mil or 18 mil. Plus there's cash consideratins and draft pics that play into as well.

Yeah it ain't the money this year that's the issue... It's the $40M after this year...

Damn, I didn't know Ray Allen was making near $20 Mil alone.

if that goes down...

...god help us all

edit- didnt realize how many years the wiz guys had left

From Mike Jones' Twitter...and no, not THAT Mike Jones....this dude is legit

League source confirms Wizards, Celts engaged in trade talks. BOS interest in Jamison, Butler. Wiz in R. Allen. Other pieces being discussed

Trade makes too much sense for both sides....It's a lot of salary to absorb (Jamison), but let's see how this plays out....

I think this trade should go down.. these guys are like 34yrs old.. on and off through injury.. you can get two very good players in two positions that they've been looking for.
Wing & Guard, & Someone to cover the PF spot when KG is hurt.. Oh well.. Someone should take advantage of this since BOS won't

What the @#$%?  You have a chance to bolster that old @#$ team with a couple dudes who could put you right back in the mix, while also blocking an East rival from getting Jamison, and you cryin about money?
indifferent.gif
Win some playoff games and all that money comes back anyways, they stupid as hell if they pass on that.

Their salary, and LT would be worth it.

Caron's only like what, 28? Tawns getting old, but hes still more reliable (health wise) then KG. In those 2 years, EVERYONE's contract comes off, and you can start from scratch and rebuild with rondo as your starting point guard. its perfect, imo.

DALLAS -- Long-running trade talks between the Dallas Mavericks and Washington Wizards have taken a fresh twist now that the teams have discussed the prospect of packaging center Brendan Haywood to Dallas in the same deal with Wizards forward Caron Butler, according to sources close to the discussions.

Talks between the teams had stalled in the past week, partly because of Washington's insistence that the Mavericks take guard DeShawn Stevensonin any Butler deal, but the potential for acquiring two front-lineplayers -- since Butler and Haywood would immediately become keyrotation players for the Mavs -- has renewed Dallas' interest.

Sources said that such a deal, which is still in the discussion phase, would send Josh Howard and a handful of cap-friendly contracts to the Wizards and holds appeal for both sides.

Itwould enable Washington to truly launch its rebuilding efforts, realizesignificant financial relief in the midst of a disastrous season andachieve those aims without giving up forward Antawn Jamison, which is the Wizards' preference.

Thepossible acquisitions of Butler and Haywood, meanwhile, would be awelcome spark for the sputtering Mavericks, with Butler moving into thespot vacated by the out-of-favor Howard and Haywood arriving as anotherrim-protecting defensive anchor in the wake of a knee injury that hascompromised the effectiveness of Mavs center Erick Dampier.

Acquiring Haywood and having the chance to re-sign him this summerwould likely fill the void Dallas thought it filled last summer, whenthe Mavs signed Orlando center Marcin Gortat to a lucrative offer sheet, only for the Magic to unexpectedly match the offer to the restricted free agent.

Yetthere are undeniable impediments to a Washington-Dallas deal. TheWizards, according to sources, would still rather make the smaller dealwith Dallas reported by ESPN.com on Feb. 5: Butler and Stevenson for Howard and a small expiring contract such as James Singleton or Quinton Ross.

One source said that the Wizards, who continue to talk trades with the Houston Rockets, Portland Trail Blazers and other teams, are reluctant to part with Haywood as the deal is currently structured.

Inthe latest proposals exchanged by the teams, Dallas would send Howard(whose $11.8 million salary next season is a team option) to Washingtonand also surrender backup center Drew Gooden, along with multiple low-salaried players such as Tim Thomas, Singleton and Ross.

Washington would inevitably want prized Mavericks rookie Rodrigue Beauboisadded to the deal, but Mavs owner Mark Cuban said earlier this weekthat his young point guard is "pretty much untouchable" as Thursday'strade deadline approaches. It is not known whether Washington wouldaccept Mavericks guard J.J. Barea instead.

Speaking to a group ofreporters Thursday, Cuban said: "We kind of know the parameters [under]which we would make a deal. If somebody meets our parameters, we'llpull the trigger. But if not, we're not going to do it. I don't see usdoing something just to do something because that'll kill ourflexibility this summer. But in the event that there's somebody thatreally upgrades our talent and really makes our team better, then maybewe'll do it."

The Rockets have also been discussing deals for theWizards for some time and have maintained an interest in Butler andHaywood in a deal featuring Tracy McGrady's $22.5 million expiring contract.

Aswith the Dallas talks, though, Washington has continued to seek morethan mere payroll relief from Houston. The Rockets have balked atincluding any of the players in their long-term plans -- such as Shane Battier, Carl Landry, Luis Scola or Kyle Lowry -- just as the Mavericks say they won't surrender Beaubois.

The Wizards have likewise repeatedly insisted that Cleveland include young power forward J.J. Hickson in a trade for Jamison, which has dissuaded the Cavs from following through on their longstanding Jamison interest.

Yahoo! Sports reported Friday that the Wizards and Boston Celtics are discussing a trade that would send Butler and Jamison to the Celtics for a package headlined by Ray Allen's $19.7 million expiring contract. Celtics general manager Danny Aingehas subsequently denied such talks, telling The Boston Globe "there isno truth" to the notion of swapping Allen for two players who coulddramatically reshape the look of the Celtics.

Although one sourcewarned Friday that it would be a mistake "to sleep on that one,"another source close to the situation insisted to ESPN.com that aBoston-Washington swap looks "very doubtful" because of theconsiderable long-term expense Boston would be taking on -- for playerswho play the same positions as Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett -- and because of Washington's reluctance to part with Jamison.

"Ihave no control over trade rumors," Allen said via his Twitter feed."Let's just focus on being positive. I am a Celtic. Green all day."

[h5]Richard Hamilton | Pistons [/h5]

It's old news that the Cavaliers have spoken to the Wizards about Antawn Jamison and the Pacers about Troy Murphy. A new name has come up as trade talks heat up.

According to The Plain Dealer, Cleveland has also had discussions with Houston, probably regarding Tracy McGrady, and Detroit. The newspaper speculates the talks with the Pistons could involve Richard "Rip" Hamilton.

The Pistons would jump at a chance to unload Hamilton, since the shooting guard has three-years and about $34 million left on his contract.

[h5]Tracy McGrady | Rockets [/h5]

[h5]T-Mac's suitors[/h5]
When discussing that rumored three-team swap between the Wizards, Rockets and Knicks that has Tracy McGrady winding up in New York, we noted that since the Knicks likely wouldn't be getting any cap relief, their motivation behind such a trade would be to try and make a late playoffs push with McGrady on the court.

But speaking to the New York Post, Donnie Walsh said this: "There's reasons other than that."

Walsh didn't get specific, but the paper cites a source that says: "the Knicks would like to see if McGrady is someone to consider re-signing in July. At least they'd have a fallback candidate if McGrady excels and they are unable to land one of the top free agents, LeBron James or Dwyane Wade."

So there is a chance McGrady could be a Knick beyond this season if he's indeed traded there by the deadline.

Houston could get under luxury-tax line in deal with Knicks
"They've come to the conclusion that Houston probably isn't going to take Jared Jeffries off their hands, but they're still willing to offer several of their own expiring contracts -- a list that includes Al Harrington, Larry Hughes and Chris Duhon. But the Rockets want rookie Jordan Hill, too, and New York is currently saying no. What the Knicks will have in their corner at the 11th hour is $3 million in cash and a willingness to take on Brian Cook, which would help Houston shave $2.62 million off its payroll to get beneath the luxury tax line, bringing them another $4-plus million when luxury tax payments are divvied up this summer among non-taxpaying teams.

http://
Brewer in mix at deadline?
[h5]Ronnie Brewer | Jazz [/h5]

Carlos Boozer was the biggest name on the Jazz that could be potentially dealt at the deadline, but as we've previously discussed, it's likely Boozer stays put and plays out the season with the Jazz.

With the Jazz over the luxury-tax line this season, the thinking was a deal of Boozer could help lessen the burden.

But might the Jazz still have something up their sleeves at the deadline?

According to Ross Siler of the Salt Lake Tribune, "the Jazz are not averse to trading Ronnie Brewer in the right circumstances."

He continues: "By trading Brewer, the Jazz potentially could acquire a first-round draft pick or another young player while gaining a measure of luxury-tax relief (Brewer is making $2.7 million this season) and easing their logjam of wing players. Keep in mind: It's just something that's in the rumor mill."

Brewer was linked to Memphis earlier this season, and as ESPN's Chris Sheridan wrote earlier this week, the Grizzlies do have some draft picks at their disposal in a potential deal.

[h5]Chris Sheridan[/h5]
Grizzlies have bevy of draft picks
"Memphis has its own pick, the Nuggets' pick and the Lakers' pick. For what it's worth, the Grizzlies also own Toronto's 2016 second-round pick (within the next decade we'll know whether that was truly an asset or not). Other teams that have multiple first-rounders are the Nets (their own and Dallas'), Thunder (own and Suns'), Heat (own and Toronto's) and Timberwolves (see No. 9 on this list)."

[h5]Antawn Jamison | Wizards [/h5]

[h5]Deadline deals for C's[/h5]
UPDATE: Danny Ainge told the Boston Globe, "there is no truth to either one of those," in regards to this deal with the Wizards, or the trade sending Glen Davis to Charlotte, noted in the box to your right.
--
We got a potential blockbuster trade on our hands here, kids.

According to Adrian Wojnarkowski of Yahoo! Sports, the Wizards and Celtics are in the discussion stages of a trade that would send Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler to the Celtics in exchange for Ray Allen, Brian Scalabrine and J.R. Giddens, though he writes nothing is imminent.

This satisfies both parties: the Celtics get two good talents that will bolster their chances of winning the East. They get a recharge and fresh start since they've struggled since Jan. 1 with age and injuries.

And with Allen and Scalabrine on expiring contracts and Giddens with a team option for next season, the Wizards clear cap space and can start to work on rebuilding efforts.

Jamison has been increasingly less available lately, so it will be interesting to see if the Wizards decide to part with him to the Celtics instead of the rival Cavs.

http://
Bulls listening on Deng?
2:27PM ET

[h5]Luol Deng | Bulls [/h5]

When previously discussing trade chips on the Bulls, we've highlighted Tyrus Thomas and Kirk Hinrich.

The Bulls are eager to trade Thomas after his verbal tirade against Vinny Del Negro a week ago today, and have a long list of suitors. Hinrich could be moved for expiring contracts so the Bulls get farther under the cap for the chance to possibly sign two max free agents this offseason.

But might Luol Deng be another potential trade chip for the Bulls?

According to Ken Berger of CBS Sports, "sources say the Bulls also are exploring interest in Luol Deng, who has four years and $51 million left after this season."

Deng has arguably been the Bulls' most consistent offensive player this season -- averaging 18.1 points and 7.5 boards a game.

If the Celtics are looking for a talented scorer in return for Ray Allen's expiring contract, Deng would fit the bill, and has a similar contract to another potential get for the C's, Kevin Martin, though Martin's deal has one year less left on it than Deng's.

http://
Amare staying put?
3:02PM ET

[h5]Amare Stoudemire | Suns [/h5]

When Amare Stoudemire was first rumored to be on the block, there were several teams possibly be in the mix for his services. The Sixers have recently surfaced as a hot name, as the Suns think highly of Andre Iguodala. But there was some trepidation on Philly's end.

And as Ken Berger of CBS Sports writes today, "while the Sixers continue to discuss internally whether Stoudemire makes sense for them long-term, sources describe Philly as a highly unlikely destination."

Other than Philly, it's been rumored that Pat Riley and the Heat are pushing the hardest for a Stoudemire deal, and we detailed some of the reason why they want him yesterday. But Berger also throws some caution out on that as well: "Miami Heat president Pat Riley has been aggressive in his pursuit of Stoudemire, but sources say the Heat are one of the teams carefully weighing such a transaction against the uncertain backdrop of collective bargaining."

On top of that, Berger is hearing a deal for Stoudemire is looking more unlikely.

"Executives say Phoenix officials continue to tell them it's unlikely that they'll deal Stoudemire," he writes. "No proposals have been submitted to the Suns that would make them better this season."

So it seems, for now, unless the Suns get a deal they're blown away with, or one that positions them better for the future than sticking with Amare, he may very well be staying put.

For Miami, danger in not dealing at the deadline
"The word out of Miami is that the Heat have been pushing to make a deal. While Miami is considered a potential destination for LeBron James and Chris Bosh this summer if the two become free agents, the danger with doing nothing now is that Dwyane Wade might walk if the team fails to get James, Bosh or another top player or two."

This, to me is some Washington "gaming" going on. They are trying to get the Cavaliers ..out of competitive gamesmanship ...to concede to their demands and put JJ Hickson into the trade for Jamison.

This rumor, to me, makes little sense and is simply part of the psychological chess game that teams play around the deadline.

I'm calling the bluff.

FWIW, Ric Bucher was just on Sportscenter and shot this rumor down. He said Boston in no way wants to take on all that salary and pretty much dismissed it.

Very very possible that's what it is.  Seems the Wiz are in EVERY deal i hear about.

But Bucher don't know nothin.  He's like Vescey is/was.

Now is the time to pull the trigger Cuban, you will get the big you need, and fill the hole at 2.

Act now, before either or both are off the table.

If its true and Wizards are willing to do that trade, then Boston would be complete idiots not to do it.

I really don't think Dallas will come across a better deal. We'll get rid of some our depth in numbers because we'd have to include Gooden, Singleton, Thomas, and probably Ross, but still, Haywood+Caron is worth it IMO...
