CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami offensive tackle Seantrel Henderson will have surgery on his back.
Henderson, a freshman All-American, who started nine games at right tackle last season, is scheduled to have surgery on August 8 sources confirmed with InsideTheU.
A timetable for his return is undetermined at this time.
At 6-foot-8 and 345 pounds, the former five-star recruit showed a lot of promise in his first year and came into the season with high expectations for his sophomore season.
Henderson originally hurt his lower back in the spring causing him to miss the spring game in April. He thought the injury would get better, but instead, he’ll need surgery to improve his status.
During the spring, Henderson was primarily a second-team left tackle behind Malcolm Bunche in a surprising move by first-year coach Al Golden. Henderson was expected by many to win the job this fall over the inexperienced Bunche, but the battle will be put on hold.
In a corresponding move, All-ACC junior lineman Brandon Washington will move from right guard, where he started all 13 games last season, to right tackle. In 2009, Washington started two games at left guard and has practiced some at center in his UM career.
The move to right tackle will bring experience to the position as Jermaine Johnson and Ben Jones were battling there for playing time.
