2011 NFL Season Discussion Thread

John Michael Vincent of ESPN 1070 Indianapolis reports Peyton Manning will need to undergo another procedure on his neck.

Be skeptical of the report until it's confirmed elsewhere. Manning willreportedly be out "indefinitely" if it's true. Adam Schefter's reportthat the organization is preparing to go forward with Kerry Collins asthe Week 1 starter does lend some credibility to this report. We'll letyou know when we hear more.

The beginning of the end.

Really hope this news about Peyton needing another neck surgery is false.

Two neck surgeries in less than a year is no bueno.

he was used to.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning is being re-evaluated by several doctors because of the slow progress in his rehab from offseason neck surgery, according to sources familiar with his medical condition.

However, the sources said that no new procedure on Manning's neck is scheduled at this time.

According to sources, multiple neurosurgeons have been consulted throughout the course of Manning's recovery, but they do not have a consensus reason for the slow pace. The sources added that Manning was still waiting for more information from doctors.

The Colts activated Manning from the physically-unable-to-perform list on Aug. 29 and cleared him to practice on a limited basis. However, sources said Sunday that he has not been able to throw anywhere near his pre-surgery capacity. Manning had been on the PUP list since the team's first training camp practice on Aug. 1 following the May procedure to repair a nerve in his neck.

Manning has started 227 consecutive games, including the playoffs, the second-longest streak in NFL history for quarterbacks behind Brett Favre. Of all the numbers Manning has put up over the years, the streak is the one he has usually said means the most.

Second-string quarterback Curtis Painter has struggled for the most part during preseason and the Colts signed 16-year veteran Kerry Collins out of retirement as a potential insurance policy.

When the Colts signed Collins on Aug. 25, team sources said that although Manning was making some progress since the surgery and has maintained optimism, the team's hierarchy does not believe he will be ready when Indianapolis opens the season Sept. 11 at Houston.

The surgery was originally expected to keep Manning off the field for six to eight weeks.

Instead, the recovery has gone slower than expected, something Manning has blamed, in part, on the 4½-month lockout that kept him away from team trainers.

Chris Mortensen is a senior NFL analyst for ESPN. Information from The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Neck and nerve problems? Sounds bad. Surgery in May and rumors that he may need another = probably time to hang it up or take the season off.

Nerve problems to me don't throw up end of career caution signs. The worry is that if he needs another surgery it will extend his time out well into the season, and by that point it may be pointless for him to return.

There's nothing structurally wrong with his neck, and that's usually where career enders come into place. Nerves are more of a comfort, impingement type deal. I expect Manning to bounce back.

when does the regional map for fox and cbs for week 1's games come out?

and i agree with this.. if the colts record is so horrible by the time he's meant to come back, they should just keep him out for the season and make sure he's right for next year

Hey, the pathetic-yet-always-overhyped Houston Texans might make the playoffs now! Sucks that it might happen by default, but hey - it's the only way that squad will ever make it in.

You're a 49ers fan. Why are you even in this thread?

Most people who say that have never actually watched the Texans play, so they've never actually seen how loaded with talent yet unlucky they've been alot. And since dude is a 49ers fan, exactly
how much more success have they had in that same time period as the Texans? The 49ers died when Garcia & T.O. left, and will easily go 4-12 this year.

Some of the criticism is fair, the division was tailor made for us in 09 and we just flat out flopped last year.

The talent now is probably better than at any point since they've been here but Kubiak is still the coach, so yeah lol.

Until the texans actually make the playoffs there's no reason why people should take them seriously. They haven't done anything to prove their critics wrong. And now if Peyton does miss part of or the whole season people will say that's the only reason the texans made the playoffs( if they do make it). If Peyton misses anytime I think the texans will have to make a deep run in the playoffs to shut people up. If not, they still won't be taken seriously. Although as a fan I'll be happy with a playoff berth.

Nah, it's true at this point. Unfortunately, if the Texans take the division it will forever (this year at least) be because Peyton was injured. We'll never know now if it truly was their year whether Peyton played or not.

Watch Kerry go nuts ala Favre in 2009.

This has no chance in hell of happening.

The Colts !!%@#$ up big time by not getting a veteran QB sooner. They can't use the excuse that the lockout prevented them from knowing what was going on with Manning. There's no doubt in my mind that they knew everything and twiddled their thumbs while hoping he'd be ready for week one.

Even with Manning I thought this would be the year they'd miss the playoffs. There's not enough talent on that team.
