2014 NBA Draft Thread

Jabari height weight, and wingspan, all line up with the avg NBA PF, he struggled to guard perimter players when he was switched on to them.

The real question is why does anyone think he can guard a SF?
Yes, considering most SF are only 3 & D players. And during the nights they play against a talented offensive SF ala Lebron or Durant, teams normally put their best defensive players on them and not necessarily their SF.

So what position will Doug D play? Bc I say Jab has way more potential to guard a 3 in the league then he does.

This is one of the silliest things that nba fans do, they have this reductionist attitude where the NBA only has 5 good players at each position that you have to worry about.

Terrence Ross is the Raptors starting SF, he's not that good, he scored 51 points in a game, because Matt Barnes wasn't fully healthy and Jarded Dudley fat *** can't gaurd perimiter players anymore, and it wasn't because they couldn't defend him 1 on 1 is because they were too slow to cover the ground to help on drives and recover back out to the 3 point line.

51 POINTS!

Gordon Hayward had almost a triple double with 37 points, Luol Deng best game last season was 27 points against Josh Smith playing out of position at the 3. BBQ Chicken.

this is the best basketball league in the world and you guys really believe you can throw bad defenders out there and not get exposed over the course of season. :{

and I'm not even counting the playoffs where you will be 1000% exposed. If the Bucks plan to win a championship, Bari better remake his body loose 20 pounds, and improve his lateral quickness or you play him at the 4.

his position will be whichever one he can guard the best.

and at least doug knows where he's supposed to be within the scheme.

I can't tell if the argument is will he ever be a good defender or will he be a liability. I keep hearing how fat, slow, and unathletic he is and I just dont see it. Ive never seen a guy do a double clutch reverse 360 dunk and said hey that guy is fat, slow, and unathletic. All seems a bit extreme. I don't see him being an elite defender but I also dont see him being so bad it will hurt the team. It is what it is, they're going to put him wherever its convenient given the fact that Giannis will probably end up being a 7 something footer who can lock down multiple positions.

The traditional position talk needs to go out the door. The breed of players in todays league is far from traditional. Kidd will put him wherever it works on a game to game basis.

So your comfortable with Bari defending:

Monroe
Milsap
Horford
Love
Alridge
Bosh
Booz
Gibson
Serge
Lee
Blake
West
Dirk
Nene
Zbo

?

:rollin :rollin

Exactly my point This guy claims he can't guard 3's but thinks he will do better at potentially the deepest position in the L. In his rookie season

I think you guys vastly underrate perimeter defenders and all the work they have to do off-the-ball. Even if your SF is guarding someone like Shane Battier, they have to chase him off screens, double in the post, help in the paint then recover to the 3pt line while staying on balance, get back in transition, not get beat backdoor, etc. It's not just a game of 1 on 1. It's why guys like James Harden and Kobe kill their teams on defense even if their 1v1 defense isn't that bad.

He's 255 with an 8'11 standing reach, he's just as big as most of the guys on that list,

look, I don't think he will get good at any position but I think he's easier to hide at 4, a lot of the time you can put him the big man that can't post up.

I'd rather Jabari cover big men he's similarly sized to, than having to chase and cover guys on the perimeter.

I said he was an average athlkete, maybe a hair above average.

positions still matter on defense but on offense you are correct it is antiquated.

Parker won't go through a NBA season at 255. I'd almost guarantee he's in the 240 range by the time the season starts.

The thing is, this kid is struggling with his weight now. These workouts are the most important part of his career so far. How do you balloon up 15 pounds when you're working out everyday? What makes someone believe that he won't do the same thing this fall. Him being a 4 who's a mismatch for the defense is probably ideal in the long term. Even if you compare him to Melo, Melo has put on a lot of weight since his rookie year. This kid is coming into the league with the current Melo body, not the Syracuse Melo body. It's no knock on him at all. It's just the reality of the situation. He's going to still be a very very good player.

The funny thing is Melo sees himself as a 3, that's why he wants the Bulls to keep Taj Gibson, so he wouldn't have to play the 4 anymore. He didn't play the 4 in New York to begin with. That's why he came to play with Amare. He played the 4, not because of size, but because he was the best inside scorer and arguably the best rebounder, when Amare was hurt.

Melo had arguably his best season playing the 4. What players see themselves at and reality are two different things most of the time. James Young compared his game to TMac. Melo played the 4 because the team was most effective with him at the position.

:lol

Bari right now is bigger than Carmelo was at any point in his career.

Legit think people call melo fat because when they see him play, he's playing in big shorts and a tight *** jersey on top of his rib padding. He's not fat at all.

am I the only person that heard Bari showed up to the Cleveland workout at 255 on purpose to "tank" his workout?

am I the only one who saw his NBA camp workout (before the Cle workout) where he looked like he was slimmer than in college...closer to 230ish?

so he gained 25 pounds in 2 weeks on purpose to tank a workout that he didn't have to go to? wut. :lol

he was 245 I believe at his pre draft workout set up by his qgent, he hasn't been 230 since he was like 16-17

Who called him fat? There's no secret that Melo had struggled with looking like he was in shape previously. Maybe not the past 2 years, but these have been his 2 best basketball years all-around. There's no coincidence here.

the purpose of "tanking" the workout is to turn off cleveland from drafting him as a surefire 1/2 pick, obviously. him not having to go is pretty irrelevant.

i don't think he was 245 in this video. If it was, he was 255 in college. ha, the delta might be an exaggeration, but he was very noticeably bigger than this in college:

If any of you are looking into getting league pass, get ballstreams instead. Someone here recommended it to me and it's probsbly the best purchase I ever made. Google it.

So you're pretty much telling me that a player in the best league in the world can go off at any time? :eek :lol
Tony Delk scored 53 points, Tracy Murray scored 50 points himself. chit happens
All I am saying is that if you're worried about Bari's defense that much, you can find one player on the floor to put him on to hide it. You're acting like he can't improve on that side of the floor and defense isn't a team concept! You're pin-pointing his weakness and forgetting his biggest strength, which is putting the ball in the hole. Regardless if he plays the 4 or the 3, the opposition will have their best perimeter defender on him.
Do you consider Steph Curry a SG since he never guards the top offensive point guards in the league?
