Remember all the corner threes Bowen used to shoot?

:lol I mean, he couldn't shoot from any other spot tho. :lol That was a stash spot, same as Matrix, basically.

We used Fisher there in the triangle, I wouldn't credit Phil for it tho.

Pop is DEFINTLEY up there with Phil. Probably closer than some think.

The fact that he can take castaways and guys on their way out the league....like Diaw, Mills, Green etc....and turn them into important cogs on a championship level team is amazing.

Because if you get 9-10 players deep via paycuts for 8 of em, you can have a fairly deep team and make use of em all.

If players make their real level of pay, there's no Diaw, West, Green on the roster at his disposal.

Only Kawhi/LMA are being paid their full value. There's your key.

Its a talking point, players are willing to take pay cuts to be coached by Popovich and be in the Spurs culture? :lol

Gee it never stops with some of these dudes.

Way I see it, you're straddling 2 sides of the fence here.

On one hand, you're irate at Kobe's final contract (makes sense), then on the other hand, you're now making it a knock on Pop that dudes signed below what you would call their market value.

Kobe accepts an offer way above the market value for his productivity even if it hinders the team: "Heeeeey!!! No fair!"

Dudes take Spurs contracts below what you think they could get: "Heeeeey!!! No fair!"

No sir. We aren't debating or caring who gets paid and how much. We're analyzing WHY a team has had success late.

2008, 09, 2010, 11 etc the much younger Dunc/Manu/TP core was coming up short. Swept in 2010, out in Rd 1 in 2011.

Richard Jefferson opts out. STUNNING development. He would not earn more money. (Usual reason players opt out)

That frees up the Spurs a little. Later, Diaw is cut by Hornets. Hello SA.

Spurs have been able to add piece after piece because Dunc, Manu, TP, West, Green, Diaw etc could have gotten on open market. Credit to them, absolutely, but that is why they can be 10-11 deep and succeed. Not magical coaching or the old guys being better players 5 years older.

It isn't a no fair point, it's the how and why their business is working. If they had to pay full prices, half their team would be gone, and they wouldn't be as good.

Make sense?

You missed the point.

-Diaw was coming off of a horrible season in Charlotte before he came to the Spurs. There was no value from him.

-Patty Mills was in the D-league. And a DNP guy. There was no market for him.

-Danny Green was an end of the bench DNP guy that was best known as LeBron's dancing partner. There was no market for him.

Pop signs these guys...has them in the right system that plays to their strengths....and they become a vital part to the team's core. Patty Mills and Green just got their highest contracts of their career after playing with Pop :lol.

I'm not giving Pop credit for Diaw. Diaw was a stud in Phoenix that didn't care in Charlotte. Everyone knew he could play at that point, he needed a change of scenery

Coaching is part of it. Diaw let himself get outta shape. In Charlotte...he was looking like a guy that was on his way out the league. Hell, Charlotte RELEASED him. Pop put him in position to use his strengths. Even his newfound fatness became a weapon.

And how would Pop and those players be doing without the rest of the team and their paycuts?

Your combining the two parts to the equation.

He can't pay Diaw, Green, Mills, and West if he pays his starters actual values. And they aren't doing anything without those starters.

They wouldn't be able to add LMA if the core gets full value. They can't add West without him leaving 12 mil on the table.

He's winning because of these under market deals. Credit to the FO for convincing them, credit to the players for accepting it, but you can't try to credit him for making them some super team when lots of coaches would be great with 10+ guys taking less money to help add depth.

Spo is a good coach, I don't credit him for Bron, Wade, Bosh, Ray Allen, Haslem, Battier all taking less than market value to join up.

Credit Pop and Spo for HOW they use them, sure, that's fair. But acknowledge they aren't winning anything if they paid full salaries to guys. That's the crux.

When Popovich wins its " look at all these dudes ( 2 starters) taking below market deals, it's not great coaching, it's super depth."

Never mind that Popovich won rings without this current model.

Wouldn't a lot coaches look great if they had prime Jordan, Shaq, Kobe, Gasol, Rodman, Horace etc etc?

Hmmm.

If we want to play the talent card, I think Phil Jackson has got to coach more without a doubt.

Duncan
Manu
Parker
West
Green
Diaw
Mills

All make less than market. Not even counting convincing RJ to opt out.

:lol :lol just 2 starters.
