2020-21 NBA Offseason thread: Officially a wrap

Exactly how was Indiana supposed to give WPG $120 million when Danny Ain't wouldn't agree on the trade?

Charlotte was able to give WPG that money because they had the cap space.

They've already reported the Knicks were ready to pay more than the Pacers. 4 years too. The Hornets even more than that (obviously). So I'm guessing Indiana and Boston were well below $120M. Rightfully so. Pritchard isn't dumb. Not MJ dumb at least.

The Knicks, for the record, were in the Hayward chase throughout. After the Knicks weighed their own trade for Westbrook, they pursued Hayward much harder, with Coach Tom Thibodeau serving as lead admirer. The Knicks eventually decided to increase their offer to four years from two to compete with sign-and-trade interest from Indiana and Charlotte, but the Hornets went to a financial level for Hayward that no rival was willing to match.

Both teams are definitely better off not giving that dude $120M guaranteed. Only Moron Mike capable of doing that.

Yea Danny's been moving real grimey out there...

It's okay to admit you don't understand how trades and free agency works.

Says the guy who doesn’t understand that you can’t sign and trade a free agent that doesn’t want to sign the offer on the table.

See Bogdanovic.

Serious question who exactly is Danny Ainge gonna do with that Exception?? Get a highly paid role player for a one year rental??

Turner and McDermott already get you to nearly $25M. Hayward's starting salary is $27.8M.

All the Pacers would've needed to add was someone like TJ Leaf (who got traded to the Thunder) plus that first round pick to meet the max salary slot. But of course they weren't willing to give the years that the Hornets did.

Matching salary was never going to be an issue. That was always easy. Can’t trade a guy that doesn’t want to sign a lower offer than he has on the table.

Folks would say at the time Gordon it made sense but he was never worth the FA hype he got that year.

He was 4th on the list as far as available free agents that year. I think Curry, Blake, and Jrue were considered top 3. Can't remember if KD was in there though.

The 27 year old Jazz Hayward and 30 year old Celtics Hayward weren't exactly the same players.

Ainge is an idiot for considering to pay him $90-100M again. Not for signing him in 2017 when he had two legs.
That original contract was still an overpay just like the kemba deal. Hayward was never THAT nice and was always going to be in a logjam with Tatum and Brown

Somehow a 26 year old all-star wing in the west coming off scoring 24 a game in the playoffs, who every team with cap space wanted that summer, wasn’t worth it. That revisionist history
So you're saying ainge originally paid more than other teams in the market for hayward. While acknowledging that multiple teams had bids for hayward which is why MJ over paid and ainge couldn't complete a sign and trade. Same damn thing . Revisionist history is acting like you never wanted turner after ainge fumbled

there was 3-4 teams offering Hayward the max that offseason

Utah (super max), Miami, Charlotte, and Boston all offered him a max contract. Hayward chose Boston. Ainge paid market value for an all-star wing entering his prime.

Where did I say I didn’t want Turner? I said he’d be good in Boston’s system. I also didn’t know that they could basically get his same production in Tristan Thompson for half the money with the non-taxpayer MLE opening up.

What? Nah. Tatum was a rookie and Jaylen was still dribbling off his feet. It was supposed to be Kyrie and Hayward as 1 and 2.
They were the prized assets from the BK deal and expected to be starting in the near future. Hayward's injury just accelerated their roles but it's not like they weren't top 3 picks
