For everyone that’s bought a crib or thinking about were you sure that’s where you wanted to/want to live long term? I’m obviously aware buying the best move if you can afford it because of all the associated financial benefits of being a homeowner but how certain were you that you wanted the stay in that area long-term when you made the purchase? That’s my biggest hang up right now.

Well, bought a loft in NYC and a condo out in HK. Ended up getting the NYC spot, because I'm from NYC and do not see myself living somewhere else. I do not have children, but if/when I do I'd want them to go to school up here as well.

Got the condo in HK because I do a lot of business out there for weeks at a time. Looking into SF for the same reason.

We on the same page, only reason I don’t got my own house/condo…I move around too much and I’m not a real estate/ landlord guy n not interested in being one either …But if I settle im going west for sure
Neither am I man. Can't see myself doing that unless I have someone to play property manager on my behalf.

Imagine an entire week where we don't talk about Bron, Kobe, Steph or player rankings

There's a bunch of factors that can come into play and a lot of them will have different weights for different people. My wife and I bought our first house in 05 and our main priorities then were finding something decently sized within our price range, not too far from where my office was and that had good public schools nearby. Those things alone were enough to signficantly limit the areas we looked at. If we weren't firmly on the start-a-family track and I wasn't so adverse to a long communte to work (at the time), we might been driven by a different set of factors.

i dont have kids so im looking at a 3-5 year stay.
things change whether its work, or incoming spouse ( and then kids) which you can then re-assess the situation

those with kids may be looking for that " forever home" now

Both of these and they go hand in hand for me. The moving around for work and also thinking about how a spouse/kids change the game. I’ve seen far too many dudes pass on bags or opportunities because they’re geographically stuck due to commitments so IMO I feel you have to be sure you want to live in that area with that person or have agreed upon potential destinations and timeline.

Long-term goals in what sense/area? I guess you could say nine are career oriented. In that regard I came up with a rough outline of a 30-35 year plan which is constantly evolving and optimally includes geographic flexibility. Im well ahead schedule but at no point did I say “I need to get married and/or have kids by age XX” which both can tie you down to a location. Anyone ever have to make a difficult decision about a move based on a wife or kids?
