Product placement literally has nothing to do with the intended use of a basketball shoe.

Prepare to be “Enlightened”…

Tinker’s an artist who uses inspiration for his shoes.

Jordan 5’a inspiration was a fighter jet.

Jordan 14’s a Ferrari.

Jordan 15’s A fighter jet.

You can research the others.

But the Jordan 11’a inspiration is below.

But your answer about the patent leather is below.
TINKER DOING WHAT HE DOES
In typical Tinker Hatfield fashion, the designer focused on the shoe's functionality. Having noticed that Jordan's foot rolled on hard cuts, Hatfield decided to add patent leather for the first time on a basketball shoe. With leather being stronger, the effect was noticeable and was carried right through the upper that featured a nylon ballistic mesh material.

Below is a little more about the show detailing its purpose and technology. I was unable to find the article but I believe the inspiration of the Jordan XI was a dress shoe from the 1920’s or 1930’s.

You’re welcome my G.

Bottom line the styling innovation is just seriously lacking. You guys have to admit that at the least,- this is 2021 -all the latest advancements in technology in a full spectrum of categories EASILY could be used for inspiration. Heck all these new toys MJ has purchased recently - professional golf course, yacht, racing team, new whips - why the heck can’t we get NEW inspiration along with small cues to the originals,? Instead we get zero new inspiration, safe designs with silly cues to original models. Air Jordan fans SHOULD clamor for more.

Seriously lacking is being too kind. 😂

The new Air Jordan no longer feels like you’re getting the best of the best. Once upon a time you knew you were getting the ultimate shoe in performance and luxury. These days it just feels like a team shoe and just another in the pack. Jordan Brand should be ashamed of their output. They should go all out for the newest Air Jordan. Spare no expense.

the only inspiration I see in the last 2-3 signature Jordan shoes is from either Lining or Anta or Adidas.

I think it is wild that people think that Nike expects its shoes to just be used for basketball, and looks are not a big consideration.

No one asking for them to sacrifice on performance, people want better-designed shoes.

And if we are talking about Tinker words...

Tinker Hatfield:
The XI, out of all of those shoes, is my favorite one. The reason I like it the most is partly because it has patent leather, the nylon and the carbon fiber shank -- and some of those things had never happened before -- but it was also designed, believe it or not, when Michael Jordan was retired.

He kept telling everybody that he wasn’t going to come back to basketball, and Nike wanted to stop the Jordan line. They didn’t want to do any more Jordans, and their thinking was that he wasn’t going to be playing basketball and we wouldn’t be able to sell Jordans. I disagreed with that, even though the people higher up than me tried to stop me. I didn’t stop.

That’s why I like the shoe so much. It was innovative because of the carbon fiber, which came from football cleats -- both soccer and American football cleats. The patent leather was actually Michael’s idea. He didn’t really know about patent leather necessarily, but he had said he wanted a shoe that was shiny.

He actually wanted a shoe that shiny for about three years before that, and I could not figure out the right kind of material and how to use it. Really, when we do one of these shoes, we want it to be performance oriented first.

That’s what helps the style. If it works better, that’s what helps the shoe look better, because it tends to look more purposeful and then look better.

That’s how the shoe got designed, and MJ was all excited when I brought in the shoe and it had this patent leather on it. The first thing he said was, "You….you….y…." He couldn’t get a word out. [laughs] Then, the first real sentence that he said was, "People are going to be wearing these with tuxedos." I just said, “You’re kidding,” and didn’t believe him.

Then, about three months later, Boyz II Men showed up at the American Music Awards, all wearing Air Jordan XIs with tuxedos. Michael called me up that night, and said, “See, I told you so.” [laughs] I just said, “You probably paid those guys, didn’t you?” He said, “No way! They did it on their own.”

The shoe sort of developed a life of it’s own because it transcended basketball a little bit, and ended up in modern culture and music history. It’s my favorite because of all of those things.

I would like to know what does a shoe being shinny and being able to wear with suits have to do with on-court performance? Tinker didn't have to use patent leather to keep MJ's feet contained. His choice of it was partly a style choice.

JB Loyalists: but but but times have changed and have to move on. they moved away from leather and made a move to using modern materials as flimsy as a condom.

I love the desire for excellence. The more posts that are made, however, the more it just sounds like growing up and experiencing product after product use cheaper materials and not be as good as it once was. From hip hop to product reviews on Amazon where you see people saying "this is different than it used to be and now it is trash".

Wilson's evolution basketballs - go on the reviews and you see people upset that they don't make them the same anymore and the quality is no longer there. From cars to cartoons to cookies.

"They don't make em like they used to".

Generally, I think Take is better than Tinker, because Tinker seemed to just be checked out toward the end of his run.

The Jordan 28,29,30 were just lazy as designs

Tate first couple of shoes wear basic reimagines of the 1 and 2s. But ever since he broke away from the reimagining of older models he designs have been overly busy IMO. I see some of his prototypes that they look better than the final product.

I believe the JB signatures and Zions need a Snyder Cut treatment.

If Jordan's are all about performance, could some please explain to me what on-court purpose warranted Tinker putting a glory hole on the side of what was an otherwise decent-looking shoe...
jordan_2010.jpg

And before anyone says breathability, remember Tinker had the audacity to say his inspiration was because "Michael used to look inside his opponent when playing"

After having removable lace covering in the 16 and 17s, two well-received shoes, JB put non-removable ones on the 18 and 19. They also came out with alternative designs of the 18 and 19 without the lace covers too. So it seems to me the lace coverings were there as mainly a design choice.

Some of the **** that kills these shoes are just straight-up bad design choices.

peeping hole? that's it. MJ loves to have a peek in the women's locker room.

The reviews are the typical reaction to almost every shoe design. Hate it at first, then you come around when a couple of different colorways are shown.

Then it’s “I’m starting to turn”.

Next thing you know you have four pairs.
I have never done this on a Jordan sig.

The last Jordan I was interested in around the time they released was the 23s.

JB been disappointing me for a decade-plus.

Every year dudes whine about kicks they don't have to buy like clock work. Instead of moving on and supporting the kicks you do like,

I think much of it has to do with people looking forward to the model and then it not living up to expectations.

It’s once a year and a part of history so it’s something many look forward to.

Honestly I get them to play basketball in, if they’re good performers I’ll try and buy at least one pair.

I look at them like many looked at Kobe’s shoes in the past, meaning take them right to the basketball court.

We are on a website that was created for people to discuss sneakers

I think it is quite easy for people to discuss sneakers they like and not like on here, and still buy the ones they like.

exactly. we aren't exactly a cult that would just say Yes to anything like Trumptards.

if some of you still don't get it, look at this reference instead.

announcing a mobile game to pc gamers that went there to see a an excellent pc game.
if there was an analogy to be made about JB sneakers, I believe comparing it to a mobile game would be the closest to it. cheap and easy to make and makes the company richer in a short amount of time because mobile gaming is the future. it's an F U statement to their core consumer base.
