Asian Culture Discussion Thread

besides the music, theres a lot other ways kpop idols become popular such as going on variety shows, acting, competitions, etc.
one of the biggest things I enjoy watching are the variety shows they become guests on.

Also jpop groups are usually HUGE and they focus more on fan service than music/dancing

Yeah, Kpop is like THE culture of Korea while jpop is just in its own little corner.

Kpop also does a better job of appealing to mainstream/western audiences with its incorporation of hip hop influences.

You still have bubblegum pop groups like Twice, but some stuff from Blackpink goes kinda hard

Don't get why he censored his face tho. He smashed a lot of mainstream stars tho.

I read an article about one asian dude who’s a pr0n star and a Stanford or Cal law student, he didn’t give a damb face all up in the videos

I'd imagine he probably ain't got the best looking grill in the industry or he's just insecure. Plus, I'm sure he's paying them broads well to star in his films.
Kenny Kong isn't that handsome but he isn't covering his face.

Wasn't that article posted in here awhile ago lol

Lol this is probably where I read it then, makes sense. I’m pretty sure I didn’t look up azn male porn stars :nerd:

Keni Styles i think is the most successful when it comes to asian male adult entertainment

I think J pop was bigger back in 90s and early 2000s and Kpop took over more recently. Utada still sold 3 million albums 1st week in 2001, BTS just did 2.51 million equivalent sales 1st week which is top 5 all time

Still haven't listened to Utada's recent stuff yet except for the KH3 track.
Maybe her hiatus made me lost interest on her.

It's interesting how back in the early - mid 90s, Taiwanese and HK music and movies were popular in Korea.
Everyone wanted to be like Andy Lau and Chow Yun Fat, Leslie Cheung, of course Jackie Chan movies were super popular with kids.
I think they were Taiwanese- I remember a group called LA Boyz were popular.

I remember there used to be some restrictions on Japanese imports/music, which is why manga like Slamdunk and DB, while massively popular, were slightly modified. Sakuragi is well known as Kang Baek Ho and Goku is Son Oh- Gong. Same meanings, just the "Korean" pronounciation

Late 90s to early 2000s, I never would have believed Gayo (Kpop) would've been popular with anyone outside of Korean Americans or Japan.
Crazy to see around here, I see people of all ages and races rocking hats and clothes of their favorite groups.

RIP Leslie Cheung man.. one of my favorite actors forreal. One of my favorite movies he was in:

So BTS isn't just hype, huh? They are legit popular in Korea and around the world?

What makes them stand out from the other Korean groups?

BTS is most definitely not hype, and their popularity around the globe should not be underestimated. I think they just sold out the Rose Bowl two nights in a row this past weekend (Est 50,000+ fans)

IMO they really capitalized on social media and connecting with teens and young adults by dealing with topics such as depression, anxiety, bullying etc. (themes not commonly tackled in prior big in Korea Kpop groups). Many of their music videos also convey these sorts of messages.

Being a Korean-American, its kind of crazy to see where Kpop has come in these past few years, never thought i'd see it break barriers like it has been.

I've been listening to Sunmi a lot

Former Wonder Girl.

My classmate in highschool was actually a Wonder Girl's brother

I'm not surprised that Kor-Ams are into K-pop. Feels like most lean towards YG over JYP/SM. Makes sense considering their style and Teddy being a Kor-Am himself.
Was surprised BTS made it to this level, based on eye test, when they first came out, weren't seen as that top tier...
Almost as surprised with myself for my stanning of Twice
"Fancy".

Conflicted because I feel like when girl groups go "mature style" it's the beginning of the end for them. Ie Wonder Girls SNSD etc

.

The mid-80s-mid-90s was the Golden Age of HK pop culture. Huge influence all over Asia. They fell off big time, especially after the handover to China in 97.
