Black Culture Discussion Thread

this is an honest question, if it originally said “stop anti-black racism” and was crossed off to say stop white terrorism, would you be bothered?

There always going to be racist and ignorant pos in every race.

The world isnt perfect.

There's plenty of black on asian crime and vice versa.

That's the hard truth.

There's too much generalization everywhere.

But what we can do is try to understand each other and treat each other's the way we want to be treated.

Seems like that twitter account wants total separation. If that's what someone wants then so be it. You don't bother me and I won't bother you. *Kanye shrug"

Where is this black on asian crime?

There is no black racism towards Asians. Black people don't have stores where they follow asians around, profile them. Start fights. Black people wouldn't even be allowed set up shop in asian communities.

in the bay area, there's been a rising trend of violence towards Asian elders. the most publicized of them, the ones that have either resulted in death or severe injury, have been perpetrated by folks from the Black community. are Black people the only ones committing crimes against Asians? Nope; case in point Atlanta shootings, white men assaulting Asian grandmas in NY/SF recently. Unfortunately, the media has mainly presented as if all the crimes are committed by Black people and I think we know the agenda behind that.. But there is no black racism towards asians? If the person who killed Vicha Ratanapakdee targeted him because of his race is that not racism?

To your other point, my parents immigrated from cambodia and opened up a donut shop with some relatives in east oakland, a predominantly black community. in the years they had the shop, they were spat at across the counter, told to "go back to China," and had their windows smashed by teens yelling out that classic "ching chong!!" trope. wasn’t a frequent event but it happened. i don’t share that to excuse any racism or micro aggressions asian store owners may display towards black customers but there's a huge lack of understanding between communities and it does nothing but create generalizations and tension.

Those situations are unfortunate. It's plenty of videos of asian store owners (men) beating on black women. This goes back to Latasha Harlins. Asian store owners mistreating black people is so common we've turned it into a joke. Not saying all but it's too many.

Again, black people are not even allowed to open anything in any Asian community. Unless maybe if you a black person of celebrity status and we built/been in this country for hundreds of years.

The problem is that the term racism has been watered down so much, that Black people no longer have a term that is exclusive to what we are facing in america. Anti Islamic rhetoric isn’t called anti semitism. Racism was created right here in america, in order to oppress Black people. Racism is the belief system that supports white supremacy. Since there is indeed a complex hierarchy regarding racism, with Black people considered the permanent underclass due to the color of our skin, Black people cannot be racists. Many try and paint Black rage as racism, people calling themselves minorities when it is convenient, but what separates all other minorities from Black people, is that we never get the option to be white.

i follow a handful of AAPI pages that are addressing this recent rise in anti-asian racism and i’ve rarely seen them calling on other communities to stand up with/for us. i think it’d be distasteful to force any other community’s hand in some faux-solidarity.

and in regards “It shouldn't have to take COVID and Trump with his antics to make Asians realize that they are also up against white supremacy” there are pockets of asian american communities that have been organizing to stop deportation and end the prison industrial complex since the early 2000s. it’s unfortunate that the only time the media wants to portray asian american political consciousness is when they’re protesting against affirmative action

I don't know what AAPI is, but what I do know is, major news media outlets are requesting that the black community stand in solidarity with the Asian community. As for your second statement, please share some examples. I know Andrew Yang mentioned it, but I'm curious to see this.

There's definitely a wedge between asian community and blacks. Historically, its the racism towards black in the US. In asian countries its colorism, which stemmed from colonialism: where being taugh black/dark was bad and white was somehow holy.

When I go home to the PI. people get angry bc I go in the pool or beach when the sun is out. They are shocked that I like tan and brown skin.

Also discussing racism is a larger topic that i was thinking about creating a thread.

I wanted to get a good discussion on the three levels of racism.\

The pic the KHUFU KHUFU posted is something I understand but I don't like.

It inadvertently reads that stop asian hate is being dismissed.

I know his message is lets get to the root but it reads differently.

In terms of asians and blacks and exploitation in community, poverty, and business. Thats another thread worthy subject.

Growing up I grew up mainly around blacks and latinos. This isn't a eddie huang moment either.

I support filipino businesses when I can. I support black owned businesses when i can.

my fave coffee shop is actually the only black owned spot in JC. I was shocked when the owner told me that.

Grew up as a military brat. Had friends of every culture and race you could think of.

White, Black and all between. African, German, Irish, Italian, Mexican...we had it all.

Best friend was a Filipino kid named Andrew Serafico.

We both made the honor roll regularly, loved video games, comics, action figures, riding bikes, sports, remote control cars, normal kids growing up in the late 80s. We hung out all the time and rode our bikes to and from school everyday together. Even went to the same church and were alter servers together.

The Batman Movie came out in 1989.

We asked our parents if we could go and we got dropped off at the mall. We were both really good kids.

As we were making our way to the theater we passed through a department store and decided to take a few stickers from the tags on some clothes.

Back then Quicksilver and Gotcha were big ****.

Since we weren't actually stealing clothes we didn't think we were doing anything wrong.

Loss prevention snatched us up and took us to the back to call our parents.

Andrew started crying but I still didn't think we did anything wrong. I was more pissed that this grown (black) man had nothing better to do.

Our parents came to get us and that was that.

My Mom wanted my Dad to beat me (as usual) but he didn't...he understood it was BS and explained things to me in a way that I could understand. I never took anything from a store again.

On Monday when we got to school I noticed a change in Andrew.

He pretended like he didn't know me anymore. Never spoke to me or said a word when I tried talking to him.

When I saw him after school he basically told me that his parents didn't want him talking to me anymore because I was a "bad influence" on him.

I was messed up about it. Like really messed up. My parents never once said anything about him "influencing" me.

A part of me wondered if the situation would have been different if I was Filipino or if he was Black.

I wondered if his parents saw me as a "bad influence" because I'm Black.

How could a stupid sticker mean so much?

Crazy.

As I got older I realized how much of this stuff is taught by older people.

Kids have no concept of race unless they are taught that way.

Cultural conditioning aint no joke.

I'm lowkey a societal black sheep, never found a box I fit in. It's cool though; guess that's why I'm drifter. Just wished I there were real life characters in media that I related to sometimes. Especially one that look like me

Probably not how it was intended, but I read it as a more universal, acceptable slogan.
yes the slogan Stop White Terrorism is a strong universal slogan.

As a stand alone slogan. n ot crossing off other relevant slogans that fall under the umbrella of it.

That's like crossing off Hollywood Hulk Hogan and spray painting nWo 4 life.

This part will continue to be ignored/unaddressed.

when it comes to supporting ethnic- and racially-based organizations, i don't turn to NBC/ABC etc to help me identify where to contribute my energy and support. generally that happens through friends and networks I'm a part of. major news networks say "show solidarity to group X" as a catch all because they're too lazy to research or afraid to highlight specific organizations

in terms of asian orgs committing to various types of liberation work: Southeast Asian Resource Action Center, Asian American Resource Workshop, Southeast Asian Freedom Network, Asian Law Caucus, Asian Prisoners Support Committee... i'll stop there but some that are nationally based or based locally. i'm not sure where you're at but if there's a sizable asian population, it's likely that there's a progressive asian organization in your community.

They don't hear you....they don't want to hear this.
Anti black hatred is established in the root of all asian american immigrant cultures.
Its literally a base main thread of their culture.
I swear this has to be written somewhere in the American Citizenship Swear In Package somewhere

"You are above black people so don't ever feel bad for overcharging them or treating them as sub human"

Nothing to explain honestly.

People don't mind "Joining Forces" with Black People when they NEED us, but what happens when all of this dies down?

Personally I'd love for us to join forces. IMHO its the only thing we haven't tried.

"Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth." - Arthur Conan Doyle

Ex: It is impossible to deal with white supremacy while still endorsing the concept of race.

My lived experience as a military brat proved that when adults stayed out of our affairs we all got along just fine.

Grew up in Germany.

My best friend lived across the hall from me and was half German and American.

During the summer his Mom would take us to his Grandmothers house off base to work in their family bakery.

After work we would go to the local pool. Nothing but Germans. First time I saw women walking around topless. Was the only black kid there. Never once had any issues or problems. Their family treated me like I was one of them. Even went to their family reunion.

Eventually moved from Mannheim Germany to Fayetteville NC.

HUGE culture shock. Didn't even know what came with being Black until we came back to the US.

Black kids asked me why I "dressed and spoke white" and white kids wondered how I knew who "Guns N Roses" were.

Segregation was CRAZY.

Black kids hung with black kids, white kids hung with white kids, etc etc.

It was really weird...and sad.

Here I am, a black kid coming from the home of the Nazis getting a a taste of what race really is from my own Country.

As long as we stay divided - nothing will change.

We keep teaching our kids BS.

It doesn't have to be this way. Its really hard to hate up close.

Race is one of the biggest lies ever told.

A lie that has become too big to fail.

P Present

Very idealistic but that isn't reality man.

WE (Blacks) will ALWAYS be in last place in that battle vs. White Supremacy.

ALWAYS.

EVERYONE knows this and when it's convenient, has NO shame in showing it.

Like I said, the partnership is conditional.
