Blu-Ray: What's the difference? How much better than DVD? Is it worth buying?

for instance, i was telling one of my co-workers i was gonna get wall-e... (move is off the chain btw) and he was like, yeah its a waste to get an animation movie in blu-ray, not a huge difference.

it looked pretty crisp when i watched it. he is kind of a know it all so i don't really take his words all that seriously. i like to come to my guys at NT for that friendly, helpful info.

i want to get tdk and hancock as well...
Tell him he's an idiot. Compare finding nemo or anything on dvd to Wall-E, Kung-Fu Panda, Cars, Rattatouille and Happy Feet on blu-ray and Iguarantee he will eat his words, !!@! it out, and then eat it again.

okay i got another side question, one of the guys was saying that i would see a big difference in wall-e as to the simpsons movie... but you are saying...compare wall-e to movies like kung-fu panda, cars, and so on... those are pure animation films.

so i guess what i want to know is, is there a big difference between those pixar type movies to actual animation films?

cause some of the movies you listed are the same as the simpsons, but not the same as wall-e.

what all did you order?

i got the Sony S350 Blu-Ray player, Logitec 880 remote, Sopranos season 6 and the Kingdom on HD DVD, and a couple Blu-Rays.

Just bought Wanted in Blu-Ray.

Everytime I watch movies on this thing. The more addicting it becomes.

When they show the comparisons in walmart/ best buy, i just stand in awe

Even animation type like the simpsons benefit. Trust me they do look better on blu-ray, watch sleeping beauty on Blu-ray, a movie made over 50years ago, and I gurantee it will trump any new animation movie/series that are put on dvd. Trust me, the higher storage space definitely gives you benefits inPQ.

Well for me, HD is all about the details... for Pixar films, they actually include all the little details, you just don't see it all on a standard def.DVD. Take Monsters Inc. for example... each strand of Sulley's fur was animated in, so in HD, you can see each strand... or the thread weaves in clothing, which is also animated in and can be seen in HD...

But for a drawn animation like the Simpsons, the details just aren't there. The Simpsons in HD will look better than in SD (the lines will be finer, colors will be deeper), but I think the differences will be more visible with a computer animated film. The same also applies to 'remastered' Disneyclassics. You're obviously not going to see each strand of fur during close-ups of Mickey Mouse...

I guess if you want to see the full-benefits of The Simpsons in HD, it'll be something like this... creepy, I know.

I may have to get Simpsons on Blu ray just for that.

I'm tempted to get Terminator 1 and 2 on blu ray since I haven't seen them, but I've been buying way too many DVDs/blu rays

No, no, no... The Simpsons on Blu-Ray DOES NOT look like that... the 'real life' Homer was a PS... sorry if I misled you guys.

and before everyone starts buying every movie in Blu-Ray, make sure the picture quality of that particular movie is good. not all movies on BD will look as itdid in, say, The Dark Knight, Pirates of the Carribean, Casino Royale, etc... Newer movies will usually have top-notch HD transfers, but some of the oldermovies will obviously not look as good. Before taking the dive, I suggest looking at some BD reviews on how the picture/audio quality of that disc is.

I definitely have to say that if ANYONE tells you BR is "not all that", then that person has NO clue what they're talking about. Either that orthey just didn't have a good set-up.

BR is DEFINITELY like going from vhS to dvd. The problem is that so many people don't realize you have to have the right tv and the right set-up. And yes,the quality of the movies can also matter too. Newer movies tend to look better than older ones of course. Iron Man and Hulk for instance, both look FANTASTIC.

I haven't taken the step up to BR yet mainly b/c I'm not really a movie connoisseur. But best believe BR is THE way to go if you're looking toset-up a new home theater.

Only problem is not that many people are making the switch from dvd (I have my theories about that...). And I've already seen articles questioning thelongevity of BR.

So that might be something to consider.

My apologies if some of this has already been said. I haven't gotten a chance to read through the entire thread yet.

Is it worth buying Blu-ray dvds if I have a 32 inch Sony LCD in 1080i/720p or should I just get regular dvds?

^^ I have a 32" korean peice of crap 1080i with a subpar contrast ratio and I almost can't stand watching DVDs anymore. blu-ray is definitely worthit.

That would be like asking if HD cable looks the same as standard tv...

also, I have a 1080p 50" panasonic700u which was one that you can definitely expect to be able to get the full blu-ray experience with...but I reallywasn't impressed when I saw spiderman 3 on blu-ray with my friends ps3. Only blu-ray I've seen, and it's nothing special compared to ordinary HDmovies from an HD box.

now is blu ray worth watching on 480i? or 720p? or is it indistinguishable at those resolutions?

480 is DVD quality, 720 is HD quality. as I said before, there are charts for ratios on what distance from the TV, TV resolution and TV size where there is adifference and when the eye can't tell. I would say 720 makes a difference at most reasonable distances/tv sizes.

and it doesnt make sense to watch blu-ray at 480 cause there is absolutely no difference no matter what.
