Never seen Watermelon Man. I always got vibes of Livin' Large from that skit (stars Kyle from Living Single).

Well this movie came out in 1970...

Damn I forgot about that movie! I didn’t realize black folks mispronounce “ask” until that movie.

“No, THIS is an AXE!”

The people who are trying to define where that line is didn’t watch his special to laugh or be entertained.

But that Chapelle take just seems like a lazy centrist non answer.
It was a non-answer.

It is true that it's complicated; it is also true that where the line is depends on one's perspective. The thing is, the reason people can't agree on a common line no one should cross is because some Americans are intent on not adapting to a changing environment, which kinda goes against the very idea of living in a pluralistic democracy, which requires frequent reexamination of our beliefs and assumptions.

To be fair, I don't think Noah had the opportunity to dig deeper in his reasoning during the interview.

I think literally every person I know was at Chappelle on NYE. Well, either there or stayed home. Kind of a lame NYE.

I really like Trevor Noah

I don't agree with every he says but I think he has a lot of insight takes as a political and cultural commentor

I'll watch the whole thing for context.

Not trying to argue, legit question.

Why do you feel it's lazy ? Couldn't it just be how he legit feels and he doesn't feel/see the need to take a hard stance in either direction?

Or is that why you called it lazy?

I read it as he didn't think it crossed the line.

Disagree on this one. There are undoubtedly a number of those that are intent on not adapting to changing opinions, but I believe there’s a greater number of people who fall in the middle on most issues. If the idea is to have a pluralistic democracy, then it seems most beneficial for the majority of Americans to not take a hard stand on certain topics, and to remain receptive to new thoughts and opinions as times change. I wouldn’t consider Noah’s response a no answer, because “the line” is something that will always need to be examined.

Noah does have a stance on the situation, he just said it was complex.

I am calling his explanation lazy. He basically just said "there are two sides that disagree", that is it. That's a summary of the public disagreement around the issue, not an explanation of his position/views on the specifics of a complex issue.

It would be like someone (actually a political pundit because that is what Noah is most of the time) in the early 2000s saying the gay marriage issue is complex because two sides disagree. Ok, they do. But one side had the better arguments and moral sound position. Noah comment never explores how he feels about the situation beyond pointing out people disagree. That is lazy to me. There is nothing to agree, disagree, or analyze about Noah's answer because he said a whole lot of nothing really.

He didn't expand to explain which arguments of either side he agrees, or why he has a more neutral stance, or what even makes it complex. He just gave a long-winded explanation of the public disagreeing on a subject.

If he falls in the middle, fine, if he has a mix of arguments he is sympathetic to, fine, but explain why.

Noah didn't.

Weird and unrelated (maybe?) but Matrix 4 reminded me of this last special. Like so much time wasted on a personal sort of rebuttal against a specific set or group it completely ignores core fans who respected the quality of the art. Didn't need you to spend that much time reaching to rail on WB or frat fanboys who just liked bullet time shoot em up.

But then you wouldn’t have comments such as these proclaiming you a hater if you didn’t like it. It’s a built in defense mechanism by the director
