The Heights Deli & Bottle Shop has really good Italian sandwiches. I actually prefer it over Mario's, even though I went to Mario's all the time when I lived in Glendale.
Bay Cities in Santa Monica has the famous Godmother sandwich, but I'm not a fan of the bread. Maybe it's fresher if you go early in the day.
