The reason for the sharp increase is because Hubei province is now including clinically diagnosed cases in the number of confirmed cases. This means those cases are not laboratory confirmed. They say other provinces are doing the same.

Coronavirus update:
- 60,016 cases worldwide
- New criteria includes clinically diagnosed cases
- 16,067 suspected cases
- 1,355 fatalities
- 8,070 in serious/critical condition
- 5,611 recovered
- Most cases in China
- 25 countries reporting cases
 
On Tuesday, Hubei province reported the lowest number of new cases in quite a while, but using the new criteria, they actually had 6,528 new cases on Tuesday, not 1,638
 
Hubei province total number of infections in the province climbed to 48,206, with 1,310 deaths - State media
 
China new methodology in counting new cases will likely see a spike in the number in the next few days - CNBC

There are a number of cases in which people with coronavirus initially test negative. In Tianjin, health officials say a woman developed symptoms on January 25. Her tests on Feb. 5, 8, and 10 came back as negative. The test on Feb. 12 was positive for coronavirus

Seems so much bigger than what is currently reported / understood.

Went out to ny chinatown today. Not many masks but its definitely noticeably emptier for a weekday than I have seen.

This is truly just the tip of the iceberg I feel.

Im thinking as of rn , probably upwards of 250K worldwide are infected. AND spreading . Jeez

China's National Health Commission has finally released an update: 312 new cases and 12 new deaths, adding to the 14,840 cases and 242 deaths reported in Hubei province earlier today


Other details from the national update, including Hubei:
- 13,435 suspected cases (down by 2,632)
- 8,030 serious/critical (down by 174)
- 5,911 recovered (up by 1,171)

The doctor in Japan diagnosed with the virus is a surgeon who began having symptoms on January 31 but wasn't hospitalized until today. He worked for several days after the onset of symptoms.

The health ministry said Thursday that 44 more people on the Diamond Princess cruise ship docked off Yokohama have tested positive for COVID-19.

Among them are 29 Japanese and 15 non-Japanese. Forty-three of the new coronavirus cases were those of passengers, while one case was that of a crew member.

The new cases bring the number of passengers and crew members infected with the virus to 218.
 
The way those numbers keep coming up in Singapore, seems like they are going to have the same problem as China ...

According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, a woman in her 80s living in Kanagawa Prefecture died on the 13th and was infected with the new coronavirus.

The elderly woman had already died when she tested positive for coronavirus

The woman who died of coronavirus had never left the country and it's unknown how she was infected

2 - Japanese (1 middle aged, 1 elderly)
1 - Filipina (pre-existing conditions)
* 1 - Iranian (Iran retracted and denied this info)

The remaining deceased are all of Chinese descent.
