im saying...took me 2.5 hrs to get back to queens from the city. its like the amount of snow caught everyone off guard and the roads were just...bad. :{ that q46 bus ride...

I thought we would be alright based off this morning with the snow not sticking... Once the afternoon hit though :x

There are still lines for gas, stations are still closed because they have run from their most recent refills. My mom work up around 6am today to get online. Parked her car and went to go get breakfast since the station didn't open until around 7am. She said it took her around 20minutes.

I wasn't expecting this kind of weather. I had to drive out to Happauge to take a licensing test at 2pm...which I passed. Wasn't the most pleasant drive. Got there early to do some last minute studying, around 11am. I sat in my car and the winds were strong as hell. I imagine that all the trees that didn't break off during Sandy and were getting to that point eventually would if the wind kept up. I got to start my test half an hour early, finished at 3pm. Taking the LIE back to, this is when the storm began to pick up and traffic too. I know they eventually shut down the LIE due to ice. My mom was telling me that the Northern State Parkway and Northern Blvd were chaotic, you know how people get in frenzies during these situations.
Some of the blocks around me still don't have power :{ I hope they have working chimneys and fire wood. Luckily I don't have to go into the city tomorrow.
Unfortunately we weren't prepared for this, especially being so spread thin from Sandy.

I actually thought that they did a good job with plowing the streets, they were pretty clean... I got gas after work today, waited on line for 20 minutes...

Price of gas? $4.75/gallon :{

jersey is getting better last i checked with gas...nyc is still bad, but im hoping things take a turn for the better over the next few days...compared to last week, the number of people without power is only in the 10s of thousands or something. once the power companies get people up and running, the gas shortage will start to end. so maybe by the weekend?

ive been sitting on a 1/4 tank since the hurricane. in queens thats enough to get me as far as south CT just outside the bronx. they have gas, so ima go hunting this weekend. im so thirsty for that 93 premium :{

Gas Rationing In New York: Bloomberg Announces Odd-Even Gas Rationing System
The Huffington Post | By Melissa Jeltsen
Posted: 11/08/2012 3:38 pm EST Updated: 11/08/2012 4:17 pm EST
Due to the high demand of gas post-Hurricane Sandy, New York City and Long Island will begin gas rationing on Friday morning.

If your license plate ends with an even number, you can only purchase gas on an even-numbered day. If your license plate ends with an odd number, you can only buy gas on odd-numbered days.

New York City Mayor Bloomberg signed an emergency order instituting gas rationing on Thursday.

"This is not a step we take lightly," Bloomberg tweeted, "But given gas shortages and the growing frustrations of NYers, we believe it’s the right step."

The rationale behind the decision was explained further on his website:

Hurricane Sandy caused significant flooding and damage to petroleum infrastructure throughout the tri-state region – causing refineries to shutdown, pumping stations to lose electricity and terminals in the region to close. Since then, the majority of the region’s pipeline and critical infrastructure has been restored and power has returned to Buckeye pipeline, a major interstate pipeline that serves New York City.
As the region’s petroleum infrastructure continues to come back online, gradually increasing the supply of available gasoline, the City is implementing the odd-even system – starting 6:00 AM on Friday – to accelerate the recovery of the distribution network and ease disruptions and wait times for drivers attempting to fuel their vehicles. The Mayor made the announcement today at City Hall.

“Last week’s storm hit the fuel network hard – and knocked out critical infrastructure needed to distribute gasoline,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “Even as the region’s petroleum infrastructure slowly returns to normal, the gasoline supply remains a real problem for thousands of New York drivers. Earlier today, I signed an emergency order to alternate the days that drivers can purchase gas, which is the best way to cut down the lines and help customers buy gas faster.”

According to the press release, the odd/even rationing will remain in effect until further notice.

Daym when it gets to this point its very serious. How would the gas stations keep this enforced though?

btw anyone in manhattan 125th and 2nd has had gas the past two mornings on my way in the line is never more than 15 -20 cars

dont believe what the politicians say about disasters. always underestimating the situation to make them look good. the day after the hurricane i knew the gas problem would persist to at least a month maybe even a few weeks.

I dont want to be a negative nancy, but this will only cut lines in half. So you will be waiting in line 3 hours instead of 6. An improvement but still not acceptable.
Not only that, If I get on line at 10PM on my corresponding day, and after hours of waiting the clock strikes midnight am I SOL?
Increasing supply should have been priority A1. But hey a half baked idea is better than no idea so I'll take it.

L train service is back :smokin
Took the M train this morning since L service wasn't back yet. They had J trains running express and i had to wait for the 3rd M train before i was able to get on :x

Why not just make the trip to Yonkers? Depending where you are in BK, it shouldnt take you more than an hour or so back and forth. Theres practically no lines in Yonkers.

considering the population of NYC this is a) the only solution, one that should've been implemented from the start like NJ and b) the fastest method to allow the gas stations to buildup supply, while cutting down demand.

if this was done from the start recovery would be better, but since its just today, nyc is behind schedule.

with that said...

this. NJ fuel infrastructure is all just about up and running. north of the bronx and CT are good to go so its fair to say that NYC is ready to recover. just need to stem demand to let supply build up. i've been sitting on a 1/4 tank for 2 weeks now and will be gas hunting this weekend for premium. people forget that NYC is an overpopulated city, so this gas situation is to be expected.

I live in Brooklyn but have enough gas to get gas by holland tunnel. Screw waiting in line for hours when there is a crapload of gas about 20 min away. All those people waiting that long could go to CT, shop at an outlet and come back with an almost full tank of gas.

I live in far rockaway queens, still no power, no heat, and the water is contaminated. LIPA is saying no power until MAYBE thanksgiving SMFH....
