If Kanye's next album is a classic, is he the GOAT?

Kanye makes Jay Z and Nas look lazy. His body of work is unmatched when it comes to passion and heart. If you want to get technical and breakdown verses and bars of course Jay Z or Nas naturally come out more impressive than him but Kanye is not your typical rapper, he is in another category. He's the kind of artist that old middle aged white people are fully aware of but still has an element of artistic integrity (no MC hammer). I always reference the Glow in the Dark Tour as an example, compare that to any other hip hop show, the dedication can't be matched. Not to mention he played a huge role in making Jay Z's most praised body of work after RD (The Blueprint). What would The Blueprint be without Kanye (or JB), the entire sound and feeling would be lost. As a matter of fact why is rap still even relevant to the average music listener/society, IMO this man alone, hate it or love it, is a big reason why the hip hop genre is still even relevant in mainstream music today, for that, regardless of whether he is technically, bar for bar, not as good as this or that rapper, makes him more important to the genre than anyone else currently doing it right now.

DC SOUNDS, that example of the Glow In The Dark tour is on point.

Anyone went to it.....should know that show in itself was culmination of that dude's work + passion.

That's almost my favorite song of the album.
I just thought it was a corny song.  Like when people think they are writing deep tracks and then you realize it's stupid and shallow.

Like Homecoming on graduation.  I like the song and love the piano with chris martin but its corny.  Referencing your city as a female or Hip Hop as a female is corny and played out.  It's been done too much.  If i hear a song that does it in a new way il give props but every one is done the same.  (ie Murs I used to love H.E.R song sucks)

My problem is i compare everything to Nas and Lupe lyrically.  And nothing can come close to that so to me its sub par.  Doesn't mean i don't appreciate the music but if your going to try and sound lyrical then your getting compared to actual lyricists.

But if your story telling or just rapping thats fine.  My fav kanye verse is on DJ Khaled Go Hard.  He destroys that song.

I don't know, but in the past 6 years a Kanye album has never disappointed. Not to mention you can throw in the Common "Be" Album and add that on.

I don't know if it's something in the water, or the changing of the seasons but alot of idiots are coming out the woodworks right about now.  Between people in S&T saying Kobe is better than Jordan, or clowns in here even trying to attempt to say Kanye is or could be GOAT or saying that Kanye has 4 classics let alone 4 great albums...........LOL.  Either way it just goes to show that alot of dudes simply don't know what they are talking about, and I'm trying to be as polite as possible but alot of folks need to re-trained or taught over again what hip hop is and the true value of it.  At the end of the day with some of the comments in here, alot of dudes need to run to the alter and pray for forgiveness.

people seriously think kanye's albums are classic? wow. dude may be a solid artist for the 2000's. but he's not touching anyone from the 90's

at 808 being a classic. That's such a farfetched statement it's not even funny. It's above average at best. Alot of nonsense in this thread is an understatement

So wait... pham, you're saying he doesn't have four great albums?

I know how I personally feel about his records. And it must be highlighted that 808 is NOT a "rap" album.

it's 2010.  if some of these guys are 18 years old then they weren't even born when jordan won his first title or when the chronic came out.  they're ignorant to something they didn't hear or 't live through.  the 2000's was a garbage decade of hip hop to anyone who's 25 or older, but kanye is like 2pac to someone who was born in the 90's.  and quite frankly how would they know any better if they didn't live through the 90's or 80's.

Frat, I think we are using the word "great" a little too loosely here.  That's not to say Kanye albums are garbage, but that doesn't make Kanye's ALBUMS great by any stretch of the imagination.  College Dropout was great, for various reasons.  It was well needed at the time as far as hip hop goes because as an album it chartered a new direction for hip hop songs and albums at the time.  Late Registration was okay, maybe sligthly above average on it's best day and the rest of his albums were average at best.  So again, there is a difference between great and garbage, sometimes there is something that is in between that which is were Kanye's albums fall into.

I hear what your saying and all but at the end of the day alot of these dudes need to research past history or accomplishments before they start talking out their mouth about things they know or more or less think they know.  Like saying Kanye is or could be GOAT............LOL.

Who's fault is that, though. **$%#% don't have time machine Apps.

Get over it. Who wants to listen to 90s artists all the time. That mentality is what is keepin N_s from progressing. Ironically, I say that and I hate Lil B, but that's another story

Wow. And ftr 808's is not a classic but it is musical genius, I'm guessing a lot of you don't understand it (musically that is)

I disagree with DC sounds saying that Jay-Z and Nas are lazy, but I do agree with him saying that Kanye was instrumental in the resurgance of Jay-Z on the Blueprint and pretty much everything else.

With that being said it is hard to call Kanye the goat and put him up against more "traditional" rappers like Biggie, 2pac, etc because his music is almost its on genre, hence the crossover appeal.

At the end of the day, the man makes dope music we should all just sit back and appreciate

After hearing college dropout and literally having it not leave my Cd player for a good 6 months I was super stoked for late registration.  Then one of the best produced songs i had ever heard was the single (diamonds from sierra lyon).  Then he started rapping.....Late registration was at best a good album.  Nothing special about it.  I listened to it about 4 times then dumped it in the stack of cds in my trunk.

Listening to 90s rap music isn't holding back progression at all.  It's moving along fine.  I'm actually a fan of getting away from Gun Rap and Drug Rap and into more Real Life rap.  That is what is selling now-a-days and that is obvious progression.

If 808s was an instrumental album i think it would have been wayyyyyy better.  Auto-crying ruined it.  One or two depressing songs is ok maybe even 3....a whole album of them.....ehh pass

i refuse to believe tha you (or anybody else here), has the musical capacity to fully take in Late Registration after four listens.

it's evident that some of us simply are not hearing the same music.
