I think it was a combination of things but here's some stuff relating to what Jim Jones was talking about.
It's from a low budget hood magazine though, so I doubt some New York Times level research went into it. Take the following with a grain of salt since it makes a lot of assumptions about why he left rap but does explain some of Jim Jones ramblings:
