Social media executives and programmers and investors have an incentive to overstate the effects of social media even if those alleged effected are negative.
From a personal narrative standpoint, people want to believe that their job is more important, even in a negative sense, than it really is. What sounds cooler:
A.) Lord forgive me, I was paid 700k to help run a platform that ruined the entire social fabric.
B.) Lol, I got paid 700k to maintain a a high tech version of a community bulletin board.
