Jobless and Frustrated NTers check in VOL. WE NOT-WORKIN!!!

to those whose actually getting frustrated, keep your heads up. I literally up and quit a good job in Food, Beverage and Hospitality business because i was unhappy. i was doing it for 10 years job to job and even though the pay is good i was just unhappy. So I made a transition to Computer Science (IT) were i actually like and i do excel in it. There were a lot of doubts specially not making money but i was determine to be in this field. I got a job finally took me a good 2 months. My suggestion to those are still looking for is this:

If you live in a big city like me (SF) use the government resource. The one i used was TECHSF which specialized in career skills in computer industry. They will send you to a tech bootcamp for FREE. Plus they will set you up with a career coach in which help you with your resume, finding a job etc.

Use LINKEDIN to NETWORK. Youll be surprise how networking will help you set up for a job.

PM me if you guys have any questions.

I never had any luck with using LinkedIn as a means to create a job opportunity. People are always quick to source it but I've personally heard of it working for someone twice ever.

There's definitely a finessing needed to cultivate subsrtsntive leads on LinkedIn.....from a cold point I managed to get a paid internship at a major Conde Nast magazine (I ended up passing on It to take a teaching assistant gig on campus), i secured a couple of clients for consultant work (the orgs posted hire position and I solicited them for a short term consultancy instead), and I used my network and managed to sidestep the first round of interviews at a company.

Anyone do preload sup at UPS before?

Got a call from them for an interview tomorrow.

Kinda hesitant to go bc 1.) I don't have any management/supervisor experience

2.) things I'm reading online are saying they basically only hire from within.

Would like to use it as a stepping stone though as I graduate in December. Any tips?

you think they just calling you in for practice?

When you accept a job as Level 3 Personal Trainer at 24 Hour Fitness then a day later you get a call for a position I prefer as an Exercise Physiologist. Had to turn down the EP interview. Only if they call sooner.

Anyone know much about the non-compete clauses some companies will make you sign? I received an offer but it is only for a part-time position. I am definitely looking for a full-time role and if I do take this part-time gig I would still look for a full time position elsewhere. I do marketing in the tech field and I live in California. I was reading up a bit on non-compete clauses and how they are difficult to enforce in CA but I was just curious if any of you guys out there have come across a similar situation before. Thanks for any help.

i've never actually experienced nor signed one, however

in theory, i wouldn't take it very seriously.

they have to actively prosecute you.....aka time and money.....for a part-time position? meh

if you were an executive for years, i'd take it seriously.

a lot of the business world is monkey see, monkey do....a lot of people are pretending and mocking what they've seen in the workplace......hence a part-time job having a non-comp clause.

also when you see "assistant needed, PHD preferred" they have no idea what they're doing, they're copying what they see as "success"

meh, i woulda had to tell the fitness mogs i need to wait a day LMAO

Took a year of unemployment then finally offers are coming left and right. Took the fist job that was available out of frustration. Did not want no lame a** personal trainer job at LA fitness.

As a side note. Anyone in the VA area interested in Lead personal trainer position? If your interested DM and I'll forward you the email. By helping you in return I do need help getting in graduate school in exercise science, exercise physiology, or strength and conditioning.

Anybody know if a person qualifies for EDD if he's forced to relocate to another state to keep his job?

Question guys I love the company I'm currently working for thy have great benes and its lax. I started out as a temp but they wanted to hire me full time. With full time I'll be taking a slight paycut for benefits, but I graduate in December and they want me to give a year commitment. Would you guys give the commitment and take the potential paycut or would you look into other companies upon graduation? The company im with is the largest company in my state so there's definitely room for advancement, but the whole year wait thing is turning me off.

Benefits cost a lot of money. A lot of employees view benefits more valuable than pay. I work in HR, so when pre-renewals come every year, i see how much health and wellness costs. Do you mind me asking how much you are getting paid now vs full time pay after graduation? Also, is this job in line with what you want to do as a career? Unless the gap in pay is ridiculous or you don't see yourself doing this type of work for the immediate future, i would suggest you take this job and work through at least the year. Recruiters like to see on resumes that you can hold a job, so 1 year isn't that bad all all. plus, you don't have to go through the stress of looking for a job upon graduation, which will allow you to really enjoy your last year.

Your benefits and employer sponsored retirement plans contributions should all be considered a part of your compensation. Think of it like it's still money you're earning
Wouldn't let that sway you away.

Here's the thing the wage gap is kind of ridiculous...because the position I'm in doesn't require a degree, but I have 0 clerical exprience....I can move up within my company but a lot of the positions in the company  requires atleast a bachelor's and the one year of exprience. I mainly worked retail before this job, but this job gives me the experience in an office setting I need. The company is very versatile they have everything from food workers to electricians to program managers to accountants to doctors to nurses...so you get the drift.I'm not sure of what I want to do just yet but I have a business degree so that gives me a ton of options in the company. I just don't want to limit my potential with my degree.

Why don't you just take the position and keep searching for other jobs in the meantime?

I honestly never had to use the benefits of my current job (dental, health care, etc.). Give me cold hard cash every time.

Were you collecting? I'm on week 2 of unemployment I'm bored sh**less.

Waking up with no purpose is a bit depressing TBH.

What did you do with your time off besides job searching?

I'm considering getting the F out of Massachusetts.

You not locked into that position bro.  If you get a better opportunity, take it.  24 HrFitness will find someone else.  You have no obligation to stay there.  This is about YOU.   Dont turn down a better position to be polite lol
