Jobless and Frustrated NTers check in VOL. WE NOT-WORKIN!!!

Then why stop at CEO? Shouldn't we know the founder and board members as well? I completely understand your point Antidope and I think it's good to be prepared for it, I just think them even asking that question is petty and pointless. Applying for a job goes both ways, it's not like I require the guy interviewing me to know my birthday and graduation date.

CEO = readily available public information

Graduation date = should be on your resume

Birthday = come on, fam -- let's be serious here

This is one of those things that idc to challenge the status quo on. Just gotta do it.

Of all those questions I prepped for CEO and founding date are the only ones I can remember off the top of my head.

I understand what you guys are saying and I definitely could've re-phrased the CEO question into something more applicable (see above).

But if the company info is all out there in the public, you should have a good sense to know it. Trust that I'll be throwing pointed and relevant questions back at the interviewer too (as anyone should), but you don't wanna be caught slipping or dumbfounded on lay-up questions.

You want to cover all the bases you can and minimize downside.

Thanks everyone for the encouraging words, I've got a couple of more interviews lined up over the next two weeks. I'm constantly reminded of the privilege I have for being in the position I'm in right now, and that can't be taken away from me. Happy Monday!

status quo? **** lmao. How many times have you asked the CEO question? I am sure the majority of the population have never been asked that. It's almost ridiculous that you expect a candidate to remember it. You know how many CEOs have difficult names to pronounce?

How many years of experience do you have? How many people have you managed? Same for you Anti.

Once in an interview I was asked 16-20 questions by the interviewer and at the end of it he told me that for the questions that I either got wrong, didn't answer, or gave a weak answer to that I would have to get him answers to those along with a one page write up about my thoughts on the markets by the end of the day.

These questions were not in writing either and I was not informed of this until the interview wrapped up.

These are ten of them

1. Who is the Prime Minister of Japan?

2. What is the current Fed Fund rate?

3. What is the current Rate of Inflation?

4. Who has declared himself or herself as a republican candidate for the presidency?

5. Who has declared himself or herself as a democratic candidate for the presidency?

6. Who is New Jerseys Congressman for blank?

7. Who is Georgia’s Congressman for blank?

8. What’s WTI?

9. What’s WTI currently trading at?

10. S&P 500 trading at currently?

And as pointless as they look they all mattered.

famb those questions are for cultural fit. the department probably has a number of similar candidates and is looking for the exact fit, which is a person who keeps up with that type of stuff or if he doesn't, he's willing to go the extra mile to get the answers or a mixture of both.

Nope. Not public service.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that the questions were not for cultural fit. He expects anyone and everyone who works for him to answer questions such as those on the fly and it should be your job to know them.. It was a knowledge requirement.

Our jobs are far from "public service"

if you have a number of similar candidates then I guess the next part is to find the exact fit. maybe those questions aren't too crazy lol.

Yeah man and for that position I had 32 interviews and he was the only person who came at me like that. He even had commentary for my write up.

He also told me that my interview was garbage and I wouldn't have gotten hired based off it alone if it was up to him.

Just gotta try and prep as hard as possible and remember that they can ask you anything.

To be fair, @Antidope is a pretty handsome dude. He looks like a young Idris Elbow x Denzel.

Yeah when some of them found out they were in shock. To close the loop I ended getting the job and it's where I currently work now. He and I have had a laugh over it in the past.

i feel like I've screwed myself... I was supposed to get interviewed today at JCrew for a seasonal part time position. but the thing was, I showed up late as hell. I still went in the store anyways. I literally showed up 20 mins late. Interview was supposed to be at 3pm. Pretty much paced around the store thinking if i should tell the associate im there for an interview even after being fairly late.

But then again, what made me late was because the reviews on galssdoor was saying how associates and management was a **** hole. pretty much employees felt like there was some tension going on in the work place and its everyone for themselves. one thing in a work environment is, I view it as a team effort instead of everyone for themselves and i cant work if this is the case. Also felt out of place as soon as i walked in. not trying to place the race card here but im a 24y/o asian kid walking into a store with women associates who are a bit older (35-40y/o) not one male employee on site. I mean dont get me wrong, i love the yams, but yo...im not tryna deal with being "dat one asian dude"

what yall think i should do? i know its already a bad look that i didnt tell the associate i was there for an interview but what are my chances of having them giving me another chance at scheduling another interview?

those questions are relevant to the job.

knowing your (in essence) co-worker's or, at best, "boss's" name before you meet them is goofy.

knowing the fed rate when you work in finance is a no brainer.

those are more appropriate questions.

You wrote out this long post on a part-time position + you were late + you're trying to make excuses for your goof

Forget it and move on. It's retail -- go find another one.

So if knowing who The Prime minister of Japan is (Shinzo Abe) is relevant, how can't knowing who the ceo of the place you're interviewing for not be?

that's like asking

"how does knowing who a rival team's offensive coordinator matter, but knowing your athletic director doesnt?"

one is actually relevant to the job

one isn't.

you'll eventually meet the athletic director and know who he is, assuming you're the "best candidate" for the job (GOD FORBID YOU DON'T KNOW YOUR EXECUTIVE LEVEL TRIVIA, YOU MAY NOT BE THE MOST QUALIFIED TO DO THE ACTUAL JOB, BECAUSE, TRIVIA IS IMPORTANT)

whereas, literally PART of the job is knowing the rival's offense....i.e. knowing the coordinator (or being familiar)

think of it like this, a company is hiring you to edit copy. what does it matter who the CEO is? knowing styleguides is more relevant to the position. knowing the CEO literally has nothing to do with editing copy correctly. apply this to every job down the list. you work in finance? what's more important, knowing math or matthew?

and you proved my point anyway, why is this so important when it LITERALLY takes 4 seconds to google "company CEO"?

what exceptional insight does that prove? nothing.

it's just antiquated HR BS these "recruiters" learn in whatever godforsaken classes they take for whatever godforsaken major ends up producing HR "specialists"

i totally get the concept of asking questions to find out if the interviewee isn't a moron....

i just have personal hang-ups with jumping through hoops, busy work, etc. (in all facets of life at this point)

again, how attractive a candidate are you if not knowing person A's name (because it takes....14 seconds to google it?) disqualifies you from the position?

(mind you, the answer literally has nothing to do with your effectiveness at said job)

which goes back to the "do employers need employees OR do employees need jobs"

there are whole industries of employees who are actively recruited.....do you think they have to answer "gotcha" questions about the executive makeup of the company?

they're getting gift baskets and free merch for phone interviews.

they're not offering 'I JUST NEED A JOB" jobs, either. (which they JUST need a body to fill)

MESSAGE

(which is why i am more comfortable in a consultant capacity, where i get paid up front and let you do and say whatever you want, afterwards. )
