i find it amazing that apple fans KNOW the company screws them by releasing inferior products at launch. they just don't care. they even commend the company for being "innovative". that's not innovation that's knowing your fan base is mindless. it's hilarious
Agreed I can't rationalize a reason to own this if you have an iphone and a labtop.  And to the guy that said reading on a 3inch screen is lols.  Its called portability.  I don't want to have to carry an ipad around everywhere i go to surf the web or do small tasks.  That thing is huge

It is called portability, but the iPad isn't meant for that--though I will take it with me where ever I go. It's meant for couch- and coffee shop-browsing.

While the smaller screen for the iphone suits the portable aspect, the ipad's larger screen suits the practical aspect. However, the iPad 3G suits both the portable and practical aspects. So, iPad 3G FTW!

I wouldn't mind a second run iPad. It's a gimmicky gadget, nothing more, nothing less. Nothing wrong with buying toys though.

How the iPad Is (Already) Changing the Web
Monday April 5, 2010

While it remains to be seen whether or not the Apple iPad will be a long term success, there is little doubt about the enthusiasm surrounding the device. Between all of the preorders and the long lines out in front of Apple Stores, the first day for the iPad may have seen better sales than the first day for the original iPhone. And there were a few nice surprises in store for eager iPad owners, including an official Netflix application, which allows streaming of movies to the iPad for Netflix subscribers.

But perhaps the most interesting development was the move to HTML 5 video for sites like CBS.com, which previously provided an app to deliver video to the iPhone. Brightcove, which provides video for the NY Times, also made the move toward an HTML 5 video platform. And if the iPad continues to sell, expect more to follow the move toward HTML 5 as the video standard.

No doubt, Adobe wasn't too pleased with the development. Adobe Flash has long been the standard for video on the web, but Apple has long taken an anti-Flash stance with the iPhone and extended that stance to the iPad. The move towards HTML 5 video would put a major dent in Adobe's presence on the web, but Adobe did get some good news when Google announced it would be integrating Flash into Chrome. Flash's ability to be a development platform separates it from being just a video player, which ensures it will be around for some time despite the move towards HTML 5.
So yea that Flash talk is null and void. Now on to the multi-tasking...

Not gonna lie. I would love to have Pandora running in the background while playing Sonic or NBA Live.

you guys crack me up. releasing inferior products at launch? thats like saying Honda is releasing an inferior product with the 2010 Civic because you know that the 2011 one is coming and it'll be better. As a company, are you gonna release an "end all be all" product that has no room to grow technologically in the future? And calling this anything but innovation is embarrassing. Like i said before, this product is not only way ahead of its time, but it is a catalyst for gadget development. It'll spark other wannabe products who will excel in certain areas, i.e the iPhone. How many products tout themselves as "the next iPhone" or "even better than the iPhone". Apple knows what they are doing here. They know they have a cult like following of loyal customers. Any time apple releases a product, and people buy it, others call them mindless/sheep/idiotic....recognize that probably in less than 5 years, everyone will be carrying these things for basic computing. Its clearly not a laptop, and not an extra-large iPhone, its in a class of its own.

This is America. Consumers arent nearly as concerned about pricing as much as they are concerned with looking cool.

Breaking News

Well... we don't know what to make of this one. Microsoft justsnail-mailed us a circular package with an invitation to an event onApril 12th in San Francisco. They also tell us that it's "time toshare," and apparently intend that sharing to go on between young, attractive Urban Outfitters models (according to the images on thenotice). Okay. So what is this? Pink? Courier(gasp!)? Windows Phone 7 Series Phone Series 7? Only Microsoft knowsfor sure. We're searching for more info, so stay tuned! One more picafter the break.

This is true. You can get a decent Acer or eMachines netbook for around $200

You're right. I got my netbook for a little over 3...

But, it doesn't have touch screen and I can't watch HD videos on it. I can't read books at the flick of a finger or play cool apps. It doesn't have a 10 hour battery life and I can't leave it on standby without the battery draining significantly. Oh yea, there's also no 3G radio built in.

A netbook is cool. I love mine, but I would never use it again if the iPad had a camera. Since it doesn't, I'll use it for skype and storage.

It really is about looking cool. Not gonna lie. And efficiency.
iPass? The best present and future alternatives to the Apple iPad
By Joanna Stern posted Apr 2nd 2010 9:30AM

Feature

When Steve Jobs introduced the iPad he was quick to shake his finger in the nose of the other devices out there attempting to fill the gap between cell phone and full-sized laptop, and in particular those market-dominating netbooks. In Apple's opinion, the iPad may be the gadget for surfing the web, watching movies, reading books and running apps, but it's surely not the only game in town. And if you aren't sold on the iPad, but happen to be someone who's looking to buy a secondary computing device to use while traveling or while simply lying on the couch, your choices at the moment come down to netbooks and... well, more netbooks. And that's not such a bad thing, especially if you need a feature Apple's tablet can't offer, like multitasking, a keyboard, or Flash support. So, before you get up on Saturday morning and run off to purchase that iPad, you may want to peruse the best current (as well as coming) alternatives we've rounded up after the break.

[h5]THE RIGHT NOW ALTERNATIVES[/h5][h6]$499: either a 16GB, WiFi iPad or....[/h6]
toshibamininb305officialphoto.jpg

Toshiba Mini NB305 ($399)

It's quite hard to pick a single netbook for under $499, especially considering you could nab at least two of them for the price of an entry level iPad. However, the $399 10.1-inch Toshiba Mini NB305 continues to be our pick as the best all-around netbook. For $100 less than the entry-level iPad you get a device with 15 times the storage space, and a full fledged Windows 7 that lets you write an e-mail while simultaneously listening to Pandora and checking the weather. Oh, and did we mention the VGA webcam for making Skype calls?

[h6]$629: either a 16GB, WiFi + 3G iPad or...[/h6]

lenovo-ideapad-s10-3t-tablet-netbook1.jpg

Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3t ($549)
Why choose between a tablet and a netbook? The $549 Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3t and other netvertibles don't force you to. With a swivel-capacitive touchscreen the S10-3t morphs into a tablet with its very own NaturalTouch software interface, and with Kindle for PC loaded up you've got a color e-reader with 250GB of storage space. Yes, we were bothered by the viewing angles of the display and the tablet experience needs some love, but when it's in normal clamshell mode you can easily fire off e-mails without having to pick up a $70 peripheral keyboard. And Lenovo isn't the only one in the netvertible game – we have high hopes for ASUS's $499 Eee PC T101MT that will be available starting next week.

[h6]$829: either a 64GB, WiFi + 3G iPad or...[/h6]
hp-mini-311-02.jpg

HP Mini 311 ($199 Verizon, $399 HP)

If you're spending $800, you should think about a higher end netbook, like an Ion-equipped Mini 311, or Intel ULV ultraportable. The 11.6-inch Mini 311's NVIDIA Ion GPU certainly has what it takes for mainstream gaming and full HD playback, and like the others it can handle multiple applications, play Hulu vids from your browser and store more than 64GB of your data. Like the iPad, you can opt for more than just WiFi with 3G from Verizon. We did the math and while it turns out to total $919 for the year with a $60 per month data plan, the 64GB iPad costs $1,189 over the same period of time.

[h5]THE FUTURE / VAPORWARE ALTERNATIVES[/h5]So netbooks may be the best alternatives around right now, but the tablets are a comin' -- or at least that's what we've been told by a number of major companies. Unfortunately, most of these aren't shipping or even priced -- and the most promising member of this group hasn't ever been officially announced. But if you're the type to hold out hope, each of these is bound to present an interesting alternative to the iPad if and when they arrive.

hp-slate-e1262851293786.jpg

HP Slate
Truth is we don't know much about the much-hyped HP Slate, but we can firmly say it has USB connectivity, runs Windows 7 and supports Flash out of the box. The questions surround the software, and given the fact that Windows 7 wasn't created to be a slate OS, we're crossing our fingers that HP is coming up with something awesome to put on top of it. Regardless, the quite svelte looking 10-inch, multitouch tablet is rumored to be priced around $549, but it looks like we will be waiting until early this summer to swipe our fingers all over it.

badam5.jpg

Notion Ink Adam
Talk about baking in tons of cutting-edge technology into one device: the Notion Ink Adam has both the latest Tegra processor, and a 10-inch touchscreen made by PixelQi, which means you can turn the backlight on and off for saving battery life. No doubt we're intrigued with what we have seen from Notion Ink, but with no word yet on pricing or availability of this one and now rumors of Tegra 2 issues, we're skeptical of its real viability.

joojoo-02-01-2010.jpg

Fusion Garage JooJoo
When you set aside all of the Fusion Garage / TechCrunch hubbub, the $499 JooJoo is actually quite a compelling tablet. With a larger screen than the iPad, the 12-inch, Intel Atom / NVIDIA Ion powered tablet promises full Flash HD playback and has a pretty nice looking interface from what we've seen so far. We're worried about the battery life given our issues with Ion netbooks, but it shouldn't be too long before we've got our full review up.

dell-mini-5.jpg

Dell Mini 5
While the Dell Mini 5 is a bit smaller than most of these tablets and its five-inch form factor is closer to a phone than anything else it could just hit the sweet spot of portability. We've been impressed with what we've seen so far from the Snapdragon-powered Android device, and the prototype we've been toying around with is both snappy and responsive. However, as AT&T managed to totally ruin Android on the Dell Aero, we're more than nervous that all of that potential will be washed down the drain when it's finally announced.

03-05-10courier2-1270086814.jpg

Microsoft Courier
We figured we'd save the best for (almost) last -- and by best, we mean the product we're most intrigued by, yet know the least about. We can't even tell you if the Courier is a real product or just a collection of ideas mocked-up as an exercise, but the bits and pieces we've seen have us hoping Microsoft is hard at work on this dualscreen gadget. We've heard rumblings of a launch later this year, but honestly, for all we know, it could all be a Microsoft backed prank.

google-chrome-os-tablet-11.jpg

Chrome OS Tablets... and unicorns
We have no idea what Google's Chrome OS is actually going to be like, and we have even less information on if it'll make it onto tablets. But more than a few companies have hinted at such devices, and now that the iPad's 10-year run atop the rumor charts is over, we've got a feeling those whispers are just going to get louder. There's no doubt that waiting on some of these tablets could be on par with waiting on Petco to sell unicorns, but why do that when you've already got dozens of great choices -- yes, including the iPad -- that you can buy right now?

I think inferior implies omitting widely available technology for no other reason to claim it as an upgrade for future releases.  Flash, USB, multitasking?  I don't really follow Apple like that but I don't see why these things couldn't be put on this IPad.

this a marathon though....i doubt that this thing will keep selling once people figure out how LITTLE you can do on it..
lol...how little you can do with it huh?

The jailbreakers are already workin on it...once it's hackable then multitasking is gonna be available and a lot more other things will be to.

They're already talkin about how programmers are working furiously on developing apps for this thing. Hell I got ideas for it my damn self. So yall keep thinking it does nothing so creative/imaginative people can develop it and make money off of it

The people who hate on this just hate on Apple period. You can call it 'hype' or whatever all you want....they deliver on their hype,  and watch whatever computer company you support follow their lead with this tablet computing thing.

I'm not even an apple fanboy like that either so don't even try it. (posting from my Sony VAIO laptop)

%%*+ Adobe Flash also...why should they get the monopoly on the powerful business that video streaming has become? More places on the net are gonna start using HTML 5.

The power of marketing is amazing. This is like buying a 600 dollar semi automatic and converting it to fully when you can buy another brands fully for 400.  Why is Apple de-facto farming out r & d they should be handling in the first place?  Makes no sense to give credit to the company for someone else's work.

Lol at iPass but seriously, I don't like where technology is going. I just want a laptop and a cell phone. All of that extra $%^* isn't really needed.

Nobody's hating on Apple just to hate on Apple. This thing CLEARLY sucks.

No USB port though? Really you guys? And you're still buying this right?

No it's isn't way ahead of it's time. THE IPOD TOUCH ALREADY CAME OUT.

And yes, you ARE supposed to release an end all be all product, that's how they're getting you guys, Mr. Team Macintosh.

You guys are dumb enough to buy this, then 5 months later buy one with a camera - one that they could have put in for $5 manufacturing cost.

One shouldn't HAVE to jailbreak something that's $500 dollars.

I can't see myself paying this much for a technology that is lacking in so many areas....and no apps are not enough since Apple prefers to focus on those more than anything else.

The iPad will eventually be much better but right now no thanks.

Jailbrakers don't add more powerful components to the insides of the iPad they just hack it so you get free applications.

I shouldn't have to void my warranty just to get functionally that should be available out of the box especially for something that cost twice as much as other devices that can multitask,  connect to other devices via usb, etc

i want a tablet ... and i'm hoping the courier is real ... even if it isn't ... competition is stepping up ... the Ipad itself is weak but apple is killing the game with the developers ...

I'll pass and wait for something better b/c the ipad is wack but thas just my 2 cents ...

it should have had multitasking out the box
it should be priced lower
it should have a camera
it should have usb ports

etc etc etc ... but apple fans just keep waiting for that next gen ipad that will still not be able to do what netbooks can do as well as what the tablets will do once these companies come out w/ their stuff....

at the end of the day its about making money and apple can do no wrong right now ... even w/ this crap
