Cantilever technology centers the heel of a shoe over a concave sole such that the sole "acts as a trampoline" to soften the force of impact, add support and provide a return in energy to one's stride. In 1991, Avia successfully sued Nike for infringing on their patented Cantilever technology in the Nike Air 180, which led to Nike being forced to destroy the remaining 180s that they had in production.
