I'm sure a lot of it is nikes hype train that they started. However, there has been a large effort by Nike to reduce production on shoes in order to not have the shoes hit deep discounts. There was way more supply then demand before. I'd say, they have pretty much matched the demand these days. I'd say that most shoes, they have produced enough for everybody to get a pair (and they ended up paying full retail for them... the 97s are a good example of them producing just enough stock). There are certainly more rare shoes that they try to keep limited, but for a GR shoe like the 97 & 98, they seem to be matching demand.
 
welp didnt win the end raffle, ima be all over these in the a.m. hopefully i can score my 11.5
