The Dallas Cowboys started the purge of some underachieving veterans by cutting starting left tackle Flozell Adams and free safety Ken Hamlin on Friday, according to multiple sources.
Adams, 34, had the longest tenure of any Cowboys player. He was a second-round pick in 1998 out of Michigan State and was a five-time Pro Bowl selection. He missed only 14 games in his 13-year career with Dallas.
But in 2009, Adams wasn't as dominant as he'd been and the organization began looking at other options. Doug Free spent some time at left tackle during practices and games, and when Adams suffered a calf injury in Dallas' playoff loss to Minnesota, Free took over.

Adams was due a $2.5 million roster bonus in June and a base salary of $5 million this season. Jordan Woy, Adams' agent, confirmed that Adams has been released.
Hamlin, meanwhile, was coming off an average season in which he finished with 74 tackles, no interceptions and four pass breakups. He missed four games with a high ankle sprain.
"I would like to say to all my fans that I appreciate all the love that you have showed me in Dallas," Hamlin said via his Twitter page. "It was a good run&..Thanks."
It was an interesting week for Hamlin, who missed the first day of voluntary workouts because his scheduled flight out of Los Angeles didn't allow him to get to Dallas on time. Hamlin, along with wide receiver Miles Austin and cornerback Terence Newman, spent the weekend with several other NFL players attending the Playboy Golf Scramble at the Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms Resort in Industry Hills, Calif.
Hamlin signed a one-year contract in 2007 after spending four seasons in Seattle. Hamlin earned his first Pro Bowl berth that year where he compiled career highs in tackles (102) and interceptions (five). The Cowboys rewarded Hamlin with a six-year, $39 million contract.
But Hamlin's numbers declined in 2008 where he had 92 tackles and just one interception. Last season, he missed four games with a high ankle sprain and was replaced by Alan Ball. At the time, coach Wade Phillips praised Ball's work for getting the secondary in place and for making plays.
Hamlin returned for the final three games of the regular season and had 15 tackles and one pass breakup. Phillips said Hamlin was playing better toward the end of the season.
The Cowboys have a few options at safety in Michael Hamlin and Ball. Both Hamlin and Adams did not appear for workouts scheduled for Friday at Valley Ranch

Damn its been a nice run Flozell. Welp Doug Free you're up next. Hopefully he shows up and shows out. Im not too pressed on the Hamlin release, im just hoping they have a plan in place for his replacement

The first season he was with us he played very well, after he got the big contract he stopped making plays. Started wiffing on tackles, speed isn't the greatest, but when he wants to play i think he's pretty good

I got a question for any knowledgeable college football heads. (gunna, dre, etc)
Why is Joe haden worth the 9er's 13th overall pick if he is available?
I don't watch much cfb and so ive never actually seen him play before.
I know about his combine numbers and they are not impressive.
But, in terms of cornerbacking, what does he do especially well?
Why is he considered the best CB in this yr's draft?

[h1]Darren Sproles Signs RFA tender[/h1]
San Diego running back Darren Sproles isn't big, but his paycheck last year was.
And will be next year, too.
Sproles, the diminutive situational back and return specialist, reportedly signed his restricted free-agent tender Friday, guaranteeing the fifth-year pro a one-year salary of $7.28 million in 2010.
The 5-foot-6, 185-pound Sproles was tagged as the Chargers' franchise player in '09 and pulled down a one-year salary of $6.62, a figure equal to the average of the five highest-paid running backs in the league last season.
Though he was an unrestricted free agent a year ago, Sproles fell back into RFA designation this offseason because of the complicated collective bargaining agreement rules that kicked in for the uncapped '10 year. The Chargers tied up Sproles with a first- and third-round tender, which in virtually every other case would have meant a one-year salary of $3.268 million. But because Sproles was franchised last season, he could earn no worse on his tender than a 10 percent increase of his '09 salary.
Sproles amassed 840 yards from scrimmage last season and scored six touchdowns, and also returned 70 kicks, including one punt for a score. He's averaged 4.7 yards per carry for his career.
Since the Chargers released LaDainian Tomlinson earlier this offseason, the team remains in the market for a running back and probably will seek one in the draft.
