i thought it was pointless to have a car in ny? movies make it seem like automobile traffic is so bad, that walking is actually more time efficient

Depends on where you be going/ what you be doing. If you live in Brooklyn/Queens and gonna be driving mainly throughout them boroughs, it's def worth it. If you live Midtown/Downtown, then it's definitely NOT worth it. I've never lived Uptown or in The Bronx, so I can't really say.
