His death came early and accelerated a bunch of events, but much of what happened would've happened anyway (Joffrey becoming King, Tywin effectively becoming the ruler of Westeros, the Lannister mines eventually running dry and becoming dependent on Braavos/the Tyrells, the North eventually rising up because of the insane taxes and forced military service Joffrey had in mind, etc.)
