There's no way the Twins let him go. There will be mutiny in Minnesota if they do.

Cuddyer and Kubel played well at the end of the year to help the Twins make the playoffs, but the team would've been 15 games out if it weren't forMauer. There's no question who's the MVP.

I still do not understand the argument that Tex is the MVP. IMO, he isnt even the MVP of his own team. He had a great year, sure. But IMO there are moreplayers than just Mauer that deserve the award more than Tex.

It's going to be interesting to see what the Twins will give him. Because he has to essentially be signed this winter, and the team has always gone the cheapest route possible. Mauer is different. But they cannot compete with the large teams....and often cannot come even close.

Exactly. Players look out for other players when it comes to money issues. And what person is going to turn down an additional $100M? NOBODY.

You mean the same organization that after years of begging for a new stadium so they could have the means to spend more money, cut $22 millionfrom their payroll the year the stadium finally got approved and broke ground?

Boy what a way to show the public things are changin and thank you for your funding.

Assume nothing with the Twins ownership.

The other thing that does not work in the Twins favor are the other players slated to have salary increases next season and beyond. Sure, "but they have abrand new stadium" sounds easy enough a reason to sign Mauer.....but the reality is they have huge decisions to make on current players. And we haventeven gotten into free agents yet. Does this mean if they sign Mauer do an absurd contract they then have no money to get anyone else? Could be. Does it meankey players up for raises are now traded away for cheap 20 year olds (as usual)? Could be. Does this mean Mauer and his agents take all this into account whendeciding if this is the team for him and how badly he wants to win? Could be.

Im stressing again that I would side with him re-signing. I'm playing d's advocate here which trust me needs to be done following this team.

Mauer didn't come through down the stretch? He hit .350 the last five weeks of the season. His OBP the last 5 games was .520. Kansas City and Detroit said"we won't let Mauer beat us," allowing Mauer to get on base and score 5 runs in the final 5 games because of Cuddyer and Kubel punishing otherteams for that strategy. There isn't a valid discussion about the MVP race, it's Mauers.

As for the Twins' future: Mauer's re-signing is about a 95% certainty. The other 5% factor depends on what kind of offers New York and Boston give. TheTwins would be ignorant not to offer Mauer a 5 or 6 year deal ranging from 110-130 million at the very least. Mauer WANTS to stay in Minnesota. He BELIEVES theteam can win a championship.

Yes, we have other players in store for new contracts eventually, but with Cuddyer and Morneau locked down, it makes retaining the core of the team a littlemore plausible. Expect to see guys like Span, Young, Baker, Blackburn, Slowey, Gomez and Kubel to stick around for awhile. It'll be interesting to see whatwill happen with Pavano and Cabrera, two guys I believe we should keep. As for Rauch and Mahay, I liked the way these guys hastened the bullpen, but they aredispensible.

Perhaps the cut in payroll occurred in anticipation of a certain payroll increase that will surge in the next couple seasons? Just a counter-point.

I was hoping Jeter would win the MVP this year, he's running out of time to win one.

His best year (1999) was spoiled by a group of PED abusers (Ivan Rodriguez, Roberto Alomar, Manny Ramirez, Rafael Palmeiro). Jeter should have won the AL MVPover Morneau in 2006. Anytime a Shortstop nearly matches a 1st Baseman in OPS, you gotta give it the Shortstop. Not to mention Jeter had a higher battingaverage by 20+ points and 30+ more steals. Jeter's fantastic performance in the 2006 ALDS (he hit .500 with 5 XBH, the rest of the Yankees hit .212 with acombined 6 XBH) should have eliminated any doubts.
