The Ultimate Fighting Championship is on a roll on pay-per-view, with events that did in the neighborhood of 1 million pay-per-view buys in each of the last three months -- an unprecedented level of pay-per-view success for any organization in any sport.

But when I talked to UFC President Dana White on Wednesday, he sounded more excited discussing the fights that the UFC is putting on for free on basic cable, starting with this Saturday night's UFC Fight Night on Spike TV. White said he views the Fight Nights as similar to the old Tuesday Night Fights program, which helped build some of the young boxing stars of the 1980s and 1990s, and he pointed out that after the UFC put three shows on pay-per-view in a five-week stretch in December and January, it's now putting three of its next four shows on free TV.

We also discussed UFC 94 and the controversy over welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre having Vaseline applied to his body during his win over lightweight champion B.J. Penn. The full interview is below.http://

You went into UFC 94 with high expectations, that it could be the biggest event you've ever done. Did it meet your expectations?
We were very happy with the weekend. It was crazy. It was one of our most hyped-up fights. This thing was so sold out that the day of the event the MGM Grand literally added like 165 seats in the $750 price range, putting seats where ever they could fit them. I've never been part of a fight like that. To be honest with you, I'm still f**king drained from it, man. I've been exhausted this week from that fight.

I know it's really the Nevada Athletic Commission, not the UFC, that is conducting this investigation, but how concerned are you about the incident with Vaseline being rubbed on Georges St. Pierre's body?
It's one of those things. His corner man -- you can clearly see -- when he puts the Vaseline on his face, he rubs his hands on his shoulders and rubs his chest and back. You cannot do that. You can't do that. It's illegal. You have to wipe your hands off. It is what it is. I'm sure the commission looks at that.

In no way shape or form do i think Georges St. Pierre went out to cheat. I think his cornerman f**ked up. That's what I think. Do I think it had a huge impact on the fight? No, I don't. But it's illegal. You cannot do it. And I think the cornerman's in trouble. That's what I think.

Do you think he meant to do it?
I don't know. I honestly couldn't answer that. I couldn't give you an honest answer. If he didn't know, how do you go in and corner somebody and not know the rules?

Dana White. The head of a major organization that swears constantly...awesome.

Matt Hughes, salty as ever....

Man F matt hughes F Serra. GSP does work and will continue to do work. It's not like he took a glob of vaseline to the back. And they whipped it off sigh.Salty as UFC fighters

UFC Fight Night 17 this Saturday night, free on Spike TV

The televised card should be off the hook! I actually think it'll be more exciting than this past weekends televised fights, Machida & GSPfights excluded.

J-Lau should have no trouble putting away Stephens, hopefully Franca is there to see his lil' henchmen get dominated for runnin his mouth. Big Cain gonnafinally have his chance to shine on a main card, this is gonna be his year. Danzig shouldn't have so much trouble cutting weight this time around,he'll show up ready to fight. Then there's RUMBLE!!!! So glad to see his fight get promoted to the televised portion, never a dull fight!!!

MAIN CARD (Televised)
  • Joe Lauzon vs. Jeremy Stephens
  • Denis Stojnic vs. Cain Velasquez
  • Mac Danzig vs. Josh Neer
  • Luigi Fioravanti vs. Anthony Johnson
PRELIMINARY CARD (Un-televised)
  • Rob Emerson vs. Kurt Pellegrino
  • Dan Miller vs. Jake Rosholt
  • Matt Grice vs. Matt Veach
  • Rich Clementi vs. Gleison Tibau
  • Nick Catone vs. Derek Downey
  • Steve Bruno vs. Matthew Riddle

Strikeforce and Showtime Networks have agreed to a three-year broadcast deal that will see mixed martial arts return to the premium pay channel by April.

EliteXC's marquee fighters, like Carano, Ferguson and former EliteXC middleweight champion Robbie Lawler among others, are being approached by Strikeforce to re-negotiate contracts with Pro Elite that have been deemed non-transferrable without time-consuming litigation.

Sherdog.com has learned that Lawler was under heavy consideration to coach opposite Brit Michael Bisping on the currently taping ninth season of "The Ultimate Fighter," but UFC brass had to pass up the power-punching Iowan when his contract obligations could not be untangled.rrable without time-consuming litigation.

"For the past several days I have been reading statements made by St. Pierre and Greg Jackson about our fight on January 31. St. Pierre claims that heis 'not a cheater' and that he and Greg Jackson will have 'no problem with a rematch in the summer of 2009.' To the untrained eye the greasemight not look like much, but every grappler knows the effect that it has. Being able to apply your submissions and sweeps or just being able to hold on toyour opponent to defend yourself from being hit is absolutely critical! There is a reason why you are not allowed to put grease anywhere on your body exceptfor the area around your eyes. Because of the grease applied to St.Pierre's Body the Nevada State Athletic Commission's executive director, Keith Kizerhas stated that the Penn-St. Pierre fight 'definitely wasn't fair.' I hereby accept George St. Pierre and Greg Jackson's challenge for a fightin the summer 2009. Lets call Dana now and set it up." - off BJPenn.com (i think)

- yeah, this fight is gonna be great once GSP gets past alves, GSP by negligent homicide

LOL!! The result will NOT be any different, BJ still isn't gonna train properly, he still isn't gonna have the cardio to go 5 rounds, and he STILLwon't be able to beat GSP.

Stick to 155 where you belong fat boy. I have my doubts that he'd even be able to beat Florian.

A little more experience and Jon Jones will be a problem at 205!!

^^

I haven't seen it discussed anywhere yet but doesn't that count as an illegal strike? It looks like he catches Bonnar on the back of the head.

^Yea it's definitely an illegal strike, and I really don't see why people are gettin so hyped off a wildly thrown elbow. If he woulda tried that withRampage or even Machida he woulda got Faber'd, easy. As long as Page and Machida are still in the picture, Jon Jones is just another contender. I'llgive him credit though, his style makes for an exciting fight.

It was a legal hit and unintentional, plus bonnar was moving.
if you aim for the back of the head its illegal
Jones is a young guy with only over a year of experience in mma with an impressive win over a tough stephen bonnar

You can doubt BJ at 170 all you want, but at 155, he's the best.

And a rematch would really be pointless IMO, and I'm a huge BJ fan. GSP being that much bigger and stronger isn't going to change.

It's not like it would've changed the outcome of the fight anyways. Bonnar was getting picked apart every which way.

yea, this strike reminds me of scorpion

anyone remember almost everyone in Mortal Kombat 3 did that elbow attack?

Also, if you look carefully in the Jon Jones Gif, he doesn't land the elbow, its more of the lower tricep.

Ahh I see

I've always heard the "headphones" example regarding strikes to the back of the head.

I agree that Jones would have won that fight regardless, Bonnar was getting worked. However, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and attribute it toring rust.

that guy had too much time in his hands

Great night of fights, J. Lau looked like he was in for some trouble til he caught his arm. Cain with his 'toughest' fight so far, I agree with him, hedidn't look that great tonight. Neer surprised me, didn't think he'd be able to pull off a submission of all things. Rumble got robbed for KO ofthe night, Luigi was overwhelmed from the beginning.

'War Machine' Busted for fighting at Gay Club.

With a name like War Machine, what do you expect to happen?

Former "Ultimate Fighter" badass Jon Koppenhaver, who goes by the aforementioned MMA nickname, was picked up by Las Vegas PD for misdemeanor battery Saturday morning after allegedly getting into a tussle at Krave Nightclub -- a place described by one of their reps as "gay ... but very straight-friendly."

security at Krave was escorting War Machine out of the club after a little brouhaha -- when he allegedly turned on security and starting punching them. Security made a citizens arrest until Las Vegas PD could show up.
