Yes & no. Shaq had a litany of other injuries after leaving Phoenix's medical staff that were causing him to miss games. He had missed a ton of games that year for Boston & then he finally returned and then that was just the icing on the cake. Obviously very frustrating.
And then he was actually going to return too, but after being almost perpetually injured since leaving Phoenix's medical staff, he decided to hang it up out of fear of a another injury riddled season.

Could clearly see the emotion in the interview, hopefully dude recovers strong even if he doesn't come back quite the same. The NBA is not the same without Kobe Bryant.
Luckily their championship chances were slim to none, which slightly reduces the devastation. What a disheartening injury for Lakers fans.

You guys are obviously too young to remember that Dominique Wilkins had this same injury at age 31. Dude came back and averaged 20+ points per game. He was never the "human highlight film" again (he actually became a deadly 3 point shooter), but he wasn't ever going to be at 31+ injury or not. Kobe is 34 and not the athlete Nique was but no doubt Kobe will be back.
