The issue goes beyond gun control laws.
The GOP is actively cultivating this distrust. The main election integrity denier is leading the primaries to the point that he doesn't even need to debate. Every other republican candidate is trying to emulate Trump to appeal to the base. Talks of politically motivated violence are more frequent in right-wing media. The second favorite candidate has abandoned sound policymaking for red meat policies that are hurting Florida, but who cares? He's hurting Democrats more and that's what his supporters in the state love.
Confronting GOP figures who talk about divisiveness being a product of both sides' actions with these observations is where the US media constantly fails because they're scared of being called partisan.

The most ridiculous thing about voting for these monsters is that for nearly all of them it wouldn’t reduce their taxes - never mind the larger effect on “the economy” which their employer uses to not give them a pay increase or other benefits.
