***Official Political Discussion Thread***

I don’t think Bad Bunny will ever come out and fully support any presidential candidate b/c he generally cares most about PR politics/issues. Not to mention them having no voice in our elections. So him posting that is probably as good as it gets. But that’s a HUGE not-an-endorsement endorsement this close to the election.

Cameroon.
The political system is unitary presidential.

Elections are single round, simple majority type.

The president has been in power since 1982.

It used to be a single-party state until the early 1990s. In 1992, Biya won with a plurality of votes (40%) against an opposition coalition that could not agree on presenting a unified ticket

In 1996, the president consolidated his legislative power after the parliamentary elections, when his party won the majority of the parliament.

Since then, he has routinely revised the constitution to reset his term count to zero, which is just a paperwork exercise since he controls the constitutional court (can nominate and fire judges at will) and keeps his party legislators in check through his extensive use of police for surveillance and intimidation (see the articles below).

The next elections are next year. I added a couple of articles and references below about past protests

First off all thanks for the post.
Enjoyed reading through that.
Spent a good part of the afternoon immersed reading about First Lady Chantel to Kennedy Lamariss.

Holy ****.
What was the straw that broke the camels back in 2008 and started the protests?
I noticed in 2008 he finally permanently amended the constitution which put limits on terms and eliminated his need to make constant revisions that reset his term count to 0. Was it that? (btw I cant believe it took him 30+years to implement that)

Buddy reads like a top level cult leader.
Sounds like he is on his last leg health wise and banning the media from even speaking on it tells the people the same I’m sure.

Do You still have family there and can you return and leave again at will? I noticed in one of Lamariss videos my guy was forced to duck down in a bunker during a workout as bullets whizzed by, bullets from war not local crime.

You said the next election is coming up in 2025 and I’m reading through your link to the banning of opposition coalition. Unbelievable.

Is that to dispel people like Kamto and the APC.
It sounds like he (Biya)lost the 2018 election but was able to successfully pull off what Trump could not, and retain his Presidency after a loss.

Is KAMTO still around for this upcoming election and if so does he or do they have a chance?

I can’t wait until the day a female candidate gets the Republican presidential nomination. Watch how BRAND NEW and different they act…

I’m fuming right now. Watching this **** unfold tonight is seeing the final reveal of the entire campaign: embracing full blown fascism. No way around it. They’re not playing around. It’s not a joke. I hope enough people see tonight for what it was and put an end to this or it’s going to get violent.

Oh no, no, no.

The legislature got rid of the term limits in 2008, meaning the guy can run as much as he wants now. Kinda like a reverse FDR situation.

Well, he isn't.
He just pays the armed forces, the police, and the government leadership very, very well, and he lets them do whatever they want within the government. The only thing he asks for is loyalty, and he likes to use financial kompromat (like alleged tax evasion and receipt of bribes, which, I should say, is prevalent in the country) to put away those high-ranking officials who want to challenge him.

His health has been a taboo subject for as long as I can remember. This guy was arrested and for reporting on Biya's alleged heart condition back in 1998.

The authorities will leave you alone as long as you're not involved in local politics.

Speaking of conflicts, there are two low-level crises happening right now: Boko Haram in the northern regions, especially along the border shared with Nigeria, and anglophone separatists in the SW and NW regions. Everywhere else in the country is relatively safe to travel to.

Short answer is yes.
Kamto built his political capital on his role in securing the Cameroonian government claim on the Bakassi peninsula (Nigeria was claiming the same area as theirs). Many see him as the embodiment of the government worker Cameroonians deserve (competent and having integrity), and he has been extremely problematic for the powers-that-be.

The only truly contested elections that he probably lost were those held in 1992. Despite persistent electoral irregularities, it is harder to claim that he lost all subsequent elections because leaders of opposition parties have gotten in the habit of encouraging their supporters to boycott elections. That, alongside harassment of political figures and manipulation of the legislative process, resulted in a drop of interest in electoral politics, which allowed Biya to consolidate his power over the next 3 decades.

When I hear Trump describe his ideal administration, all I can picture is an American version of Biya. They are both uninterested in governing (in 2018, Biya had already spent a cumulative five years in Switzerland alone), they operate like mob bosses, they rely on the military/police to rule, they reject any kind of criticism, and they see themselves as the embodiment of the state.

Trevor Noah wasnt joking when he called him "the first African president."
