Exactly.

The Iraq war was dumb and we should not have been there in the first place but since we were mired in that Country, General Patraeus was the ideal field commander for that time and place. Successful counter insurgencies are hard to pull off and he did just that.

However his tactical and diplomatic acumen (he knew how to flip a number of Sunni militants over to the US side) are irrelevant for this current situation.
