This Is How Republics Die
And no, the nation will not just "bounce back" once Trump is gone

"Republics die when the price of losing political struggles becomes higher than individual politicians are willing to pay, so they just roll over in favor of the interests of whoever is most powerful. Republics die when compromise is seen as betrayal, and a single principled vote, position or statement is enough to cause donors and party to turn their back and end a political career, or even end a person’s ability to earn a living."

House Democrats Subpoena Hope Hicks
One of the president's closest aides is the latest to be told to come testify before Congress

I underlined this excerpt below because of the inclusion of Annie Donaldson, who served as chief of staff to former WH Counsel Don McGahn. The Mueller report states that, like McGahn, she was prepared to resign in protest over president Trump directing McGahn to have Mueller removed. McGahn told Donaldson he was prepared to resign because he didn't want to do something the president ordered him to do regarding the DOJ, though he didn't say the order was to get Mueller removed. According to the report he didn't tell Donaldson because he didn't want to involve her in the investigation.
Donaldson was able to infer the order had to do with the Russia investigation though, and she prepared to resign along with McGahn.
(Evidentiary basis for the above descriptions is in the Mueller report excerpts further down below)

Donaldson perhaps might not be as inclined as McGahn to go along with the WH's likely order to refuse to testify. As some may have noticed something about the DOJ's Office of Legal Counsel opinion they released that senior WH advisers like McGahn are immune from being compelled to testify to Congress. Crucially, the OLC opinion does not say anything about the witness volunarily testifying, only that they're immune from being compelled in the view of Barr's DOJ.
There's a possibility that Donaldson may not be as receptive to the idea of ignoring the subpoena on the WH's orders as McGahn. And she kept detailed notes, which are referenced many times in the Mueller report's volume II on obstruction of justice.
