Official Sacramento Kings Off-season Thread

Ugh I hate that it probably is gonna take something whacky, intricate, and "out there" like a publicly funded arena, to work.

But at this point I don't even care how many crazy hoops and obstacle they need to work around. JUST GET IT DONE.

Our friend Sam Amick with an excellent recap of the events of the past few days. Nothing really new here, but there is an interesting tidbit that Clay Bennett attended last week's Thunder game in Sacramento, also known as "Here We Stay" Night II.

I finally realized that this is one thing that is unique and so very special about sports. I finally gave up trying to explain to her why the Kings mean so damn much to me, my friends, and countless other Kings fans; and just told her that this is just something very trivial to the average Joe, but can turn into a love-like relationship that is just indescribable the way you can bond to something like this.

Anyways, just read this over on SactownRoyalty, not really sure what to really make of it. My mind is telling me to brush this off and not put stock into it, but my HEART is telling me that this is absolutely a great sign
My Experience with the Maloofs at the BoG
I was the one Kings fans yesterday at the BoG meeting. I've been collecting my thoughts over the last day and getting past the initial excitement of actually seeing the Maloofs and having them read my sign ("Sacramento Never Gave Up on the Kings, Don't Give Up on Us"). I just wanted to share my story of the experience as it has made me feel a good deal better about the team staying in Sac.

After waiting outside with the Sacramento media for three hours, I saw not ONE owner enter or exit the St. Regis. Then around noon, all hell broke loose as the guy from KXTV spotted the Maloofs (George, Gavin, Joe) down the street. Tony from SacBee had told me that on Thursday, the owners were coming in and out of the door we were camped by, so it must have been the most direct one for the owners to their meeting room. The Maloofs had surprised us as they had snuck out a side door and were trying to locate their driver, sort of unsuccessfully as we intercepted them easily.
This is notable because they left the meeting first, before any other owners. They wanted out of there. They were defeated and they knew it. I'm not an expert on body language or anything, but they moved and acted like they had not met their objectives for the two days and were escaping.

The guys from the Sac media effectively cornered George and Joe who were defiantly saying "hogwash" and "go back to where he came from." Gavin was separated and was standing next to me. He acknowledged me, shook my hand, and thanked me for coming out. I wished him "good luck" and encouraged him to "do the right thing". Then, almost instantly, their car was found and they were piling in and taking off. During the whole thing, they did not want to be there, not because they didn't want to talk to the press, but because they were embarrassed.

Gavin's interaction with me was weird. He acted like I was a "friend". After being out-classed and embarrassed in the meeting, maybe a lowly Sacramento Kings fan was the closest he could get to a supporter at that moment. His acknowledgement and smiles to me tells me he was happy I was there.

All this just makes me think more and more that:

1. The Maloofs are uncomfortable among their ownership peers
2. They were outclassed and outgunned by KJ
3. They want someone else to make this all too important decision for them

Unfortunately, daddy can't make everything better for them at this point. Instead, the NBA Relocation Committee will play the part of the family decision-maker over the course of the next two weeks and relieve the brothers of their business ineptitude.

Happy to do my small part while living in NYC,
Matt from Auburn
I wonder what C-Webb and them chatted about...

Sources indicate former Kings all-star forward Chris Webber was seen in Las Vegas talking with members of the Maloof family Saturday afternoon.

Webber did not return a phone call this weekend.

Amidst the madness and uncertainty of the Maloofs attempted Kings’ relocation to Anaheim, a meeting between Webber and family members could mean nothing, something or everything.

Webber, now a TNT NBA commentator, last week surprised many with statements regarding his desire and attempts to assist the efforts to keep the Kings in Sacramento.

Sources within the past month told Marty Mac’s World Webber had been working with a group that wanted to buy the Kings from the Maloofs.

However, the Maloofs steadfastly have insisted the franchise is not for sale. Webber’s group was unable to get a meeting with the Maloofs.

Clearly, there are more questions than answers regarding the attempted relocation. Following last week’s two-day NBA Board of Governors meeting Commissioner David Stern said the Kings deal had changed during the past few days.

That’s why the league granted the Maloofs another extension – this time May 2 – to apply for the move to Anaheim.

The NBA wants more information from the Anaheim group pursuing the Kings franchise as well from the Maloofs.

Commissioner David Stern said NBA owners have an incomplete understanding of the deal. That means the owners, who ultimately must give their majority blessing to the move, have the same understanding as you and I.

Stern indicated the league’s relocation group needed more information about potential TV revenue, any necessary upgrades to the Honda Center arena and relocation costs.

We all know the Maloofs want to move the franchise to Anaheim. We assume they believe this move will reap increased financial benefits. The common belief is the Maloofs expect a great increase from a new TV contract in a larger market.

The Maloofs have not spoken publicly about their business financial condition. If they indeed are struggling, any information of desperation only lessens any leverage they believe they possess.

Reports during the past year have suggested they are in danger of losing control of the Palms Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

They have denied the accuracy of those reports.

More indicative of their financial peril was the sale of their family-owned beer distributorship last year. Not only was it the foundation of their business portfolio, it was a prized possession because of ties to their father and grandfather.

Moreover, if anyone owns a beer distributorship in America, why the heck would you sell it unless somehow pressured to make that move. Even in times of depression, beer consumers find a way to get their suds.

I’ve been telling folks for months that no one truly knows the specifics of this deal. That’s because as big-time deals are concerned, this one is being thrown together.

There have been people talking two months ago about how it was a done deal the Kings were leaving. Here we are in the middle of April and that remains an uncertainty.

Is it true the Maloof's said they wouldn't sell?

Sorry I haven't been following too well, but if they do come to Anaheim I will be buying season tix (already put myself on the list)...so for the devout fans you will be welcome to come to a game with me...if you buy me beers lol.

Yes, its true. Those dummies are clinging on to the only real asset they have left. If they move, I give them 3 maybe 4 years tops before they give in and hand over some, if not majority, ownership to Samueli.

that dude is straight taking advantage of the Maloofs with the deal and the loans.
